I’m a Leo but I Feel and Act More Like a Virgo – Here’s Why

If you ask someone in the street what their ‘sign’ is, they would very likely know it. They might not share it with you, a complete stranger, but they would know it! If you also asked them what their Moon or Mercury sign was, however, they probably wouldn’t. Despite the increase in astrology’s popularity over recent decades, most people aren’t aware of the other components of their birth chart, many of which are just as important as the Sun sign. I myself am a Leo but since I have both Mercury and Venus in Virgo, I can easily relate to the sign.

So, it’s really no surprise that someone born under one zodiac sign might feel more like another — they may simply have more of that sign in their chart! But there are a few other reasons too so please read on.

Natal Mercury is in Virgo

Mercury is a very, very important part of the birth chart because it governs intellect. It’s basically the filter through which all of your thoughts pass through, and are coloured by. It governs other areas of life, too but this is the one which most astrologers focus on the most.

Roughly a third of all Leos have Mercury in Virgo in their birth chart because swift little Mercury is never far from the Sun. For instance, people born with a Leo Sun sign, could have Mercury in Leo, Mercury in Cancer (the sign before Leo), or Mercury in Virgo (the sign after Leo). Unless the planet gets knocked out of its orbit one day, it’ll never be further away than, or closer than, one zodiac sign.

Additionally, it’s worth nothing that since Mercury is in its sign of rulership (although it also rules Gemini), these people could feel the effects of the planet more so that someone with Mercury in a sign it doesn’t rule, like Aries or Pisces. I’m a Leo with this placement and I really do feel the effects of it, especially in my approach to my work, which is normally organised and through.

The Natal Moon is in Virgo

The Moon is a very important part of the birth chart. It represents a core part of your personality. In old astrology, the Moon was considered more important than the Sun because it was, and still is, considered by many, to represent who you really are, deep down; your true self. Specifically, the natal Moon presides over the following aspects of life:

  • Your emotional nature
  • Your instinctual reactions
  • Your subconscious mind
  • Your relationship with your mother or primary caregiver
  • Your upbringing
  • What you need to feel happy and secure
  • What you truly desire
  • What fills your heart with joy

Those with their natal Moon in Virgo will very likely relate a lot to the traits associated that are with the placement. You can easily find what your Moon sign is by using one of the many birth chart calculators found online (Stars & Paths Astrology doesn’t currently have one).

Virgo is in the 1st House (Virgo Rising)

Some people don’t know what their rising sign is but if they were to look it up using a birth chart calculator, they might find they have Virgo rising (aka the Ascendant or first house). It could also be in what astrologers call a critical degree. If so, it would be even more influential.

Some people with Virgo rising also have the same sign in the second house, which increases the sign’s influence in their chart. The second house elaborates on your personality and can be seen as an extension of the first house. It governs areas of life such as personal assets, personal values, finances, self-worth, self-esteem, talents and skills. These areas of life are arguably significant in anyone’s life.

Those with these two placements alone would have plenty of Virgoan energy in their birth chart. Some people also have the planet which rules Virgo, cerebral Mercury, located in the first house.

Birth Time is Incorrect

I think it’s worth noting that birth time can be taken down incorrectly. Mine was. My father told me the exact time I was born, yet it was documented in my Mother’s notebook as being almost ten minutes later. This was in the 1980s when I suppose they were less fussy about getting the exact time of birth down.

If I had accepted the wrong time of birth that was written down by the nurse, I would have had Cancer rising. But, we all later agreed that my father’s time was the correct time, and meant I had Gemini rising. And that change of sign made all the difference to my chart and therefore, my personality. So check yours is definitely right!

I think it would also be interesting to mention that I know a woman who always thought she was a Leo but was actually a Virgo. She was born on the cusp but her birth time was jotted down by her father incorrectly. When she discovered her actual birth time, she wasn’t hugely surprised to learn that she was, in fact, a Virgo as she had always related so much more to that sign! So, it absolutely happens!

Multiple Personal Planets in Virgo

Someone could be born under the sign of Leo but have one or more personal planets, in Virgo. I mentioned earlier that they could have their Mercury or the Moon in Virgo but Venus and or Mars could also be located in the sign.

Venus, among other things, influences how we express our love for others and ourselves. Mars is mainly associated with how we act and react to external stimuli. The more personal planets someone has in one sign, the more likely they are to relate to some extent to the personality traits that are associated with it.

6th House Dominant Birth Chart

When you tally up all of the 6th house energy in the birth chart, it may show up as one of the dominant houses. Normally, we have a few signs and/or houses which appear as dominant and many times, they are different to the house the natal Sun is in. Some people can have just one house that is dominant, and it sometimes isn’t the same as the Sun sign. Sun, Moon or Mercury in 6th.

A Major Aspect Involving Mercury

In the birth chart, not all aspects are created equal. Some are more influential than others. When we use a calculator online to look at the birth chart, these are usually listed in order of importance. Mercury may be involved in one or more of the most influential aspects in your birth chart. As such, you may find yourself thinking and feeling more like the virgin and less like the lion.

Other Influential Factors

Although I’ve provided plenty of suggestions above, there are still many other reasons why someone might feel like a different sign than the one they were born under. These include being raised by a Virgo parent.

Additionally, Leos are actually very actually well organzied individuals too! My father was a Leo with Mercury in Leo and he was a tremendously organized individual. That trait certainly doesn’t belong to just one or two other signs. Many signs, and many people with a mix of many different signs in their chart are regarded as organized, tidy and diligent.

At the end of the day, the best way to understand why anyone feels more like another sign is to get a birth chart reading done with a pro astrologer. As long as your time of birth is exactly right, they should be able to point out why you feel more like a sign other than the one you were born under.
