What the Comets and Asteroids Mean in Astrology

Besides the asteroids and comets listed in this article, there are, of course, many more celestial bodies in our solar system. Many which have undoubtedly yet to be discovered. But the ones that we know of, and have attributed meaning and significance to, pack a proverbial punch. Each one represents important themes in life, such as love, lust, pain, and healing. Below, I’ll be delineating each of the most well-known asteroids and comets in astrology today. As our species continues to discover more objects in our solar system, and as astrology continues to evolve, I will update this list to include those new objects.

Asteroid Lilith 1811: Significance Currently Unknown

There are actually a few different Liliths in astrology and this can be a bit confusing. Personally, I got confused by them in my early days of studying astrology. There are three main Liliths in total. Two are calculated points and one is an actual asteroid. The two calculated points comprise the Dark Moon Lilith, and the Black Moon Lilith.

When most people talk about the Lilith, they are referring to the Black Moon Lilith. This Lilith is the most widely recognised of the three. Some people I have spoken to, who seem quite clued up on astrology didn’t even know that the other two existed! And I don’t blame them because they aren’t often mentioned by astrology enthusiasts, or professional astrologers.

This celestial body isn’t often used by astrologers when they conduct birth chart readings, either because no one really knows what it symbolizes…Yet. Until someone comes along and bestows upon it some kind of meaning, we won’t know much about it. I am certain that it bears some significance in the chart because all astronomical bodies do, however, its significance, to this day, remains unknown for the most part.

Chiron

This is probably the most well-known minor planet in astrology. It was first classed as an asteroid when it was discovered but now it’s classed as both a comet and minor planet. Most amateur astrologers and astrology enthusiasts have heard of Chiron and know roughly what it is supposed to indicate in the birth chart. It’s certainly the first minor celestial body in astrology that I became aware of. To be honest, up until about five years ago, I hadn’t even heard of the others.

Chiron is frequently referred to as the “Wounded Healer” by professional astrologers. It is said to indicate our pain points and deepest emotional wounds but equally, what we find most healing and transforming. It illuminates paths to personal as well as spiritual growth. Considering this, it’s a pretty important, or at least, very useful part of the birth chart. Personally, when I first read about my own Chiron placement, I found the information it provided enlightening. Before reading about it, I wasn’t quite able to articulate what I really wanted to work on in this life.

Ceres

Ceres is an asteroid with a motherly quality about it. Like the Moon, it’s associated with the mother, motherhood, and how we nurture ourselves and our loved ones. However, it covers a plethora of other life themes. These are:

  • How we are likely to go about creating a safe and secure home for ourselves and our family
  • Fertility and growth; both in the tangible and intangible sense
  • Cycles of life and death
  • Physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual nourishment
  • Environmental awareness

To use a couple of examples of how Ceres may influence us, someone with Ceres in the sign of Cancer, or the 4th house, which is linked to the Cancer, could be more inclined to adopt a motherly approach to caring for those around them, because this sign is strongly associated with the mother and nurturing, supportive tendencies.

Someone with Ceres in freedom-loving, rule-breaking, unorthodox Aquarius might take an unusual approach towards caring for those around them. They could prefer to encourage them to always stand on their own two feet and relish seeing them thrive as strong and independent individuals. They might also have an unconventional approach towards their self-care.

Juno

Juno is one of the lesser known astronomical bodies in astrology although it has plenty to offer lovers and those seeking to enter into marriage alike. Juno was the Roman goddess of marriage and during Roman times, people would pray to her for a successful and long lasting union. This asteroid is associated with the following:

  • soulmates
  • twin-flames
  • loyalty
  • longterm commitment and marriage
  • shared values and goals in relationships

The placement of this asteroid in the birth chart may indicate the kind of positive and negative experiences someone might have within the realm of a relationship, especially a longterm, monogamous one. If marriage is on the table, taking a look at the sign and house Juno is in could therefore be quite worthwhile. Personally, in the past few years, I have started to look at lot more at this body when evaluating my own romantic relationships with others. I found it especially helpful to look at the synastric relationship between my Juno and my current partner’s Juno a little before we became engaged. I found the insight it offered quite interesting!

Vesta

Vesta, like Juno, is one of the lesser known asteroids in astrology but it still has quite a lot of interesting information to offer about love, romance and other personal life themes. It was discovered in the early 1800s and it was named after the Roman goddess of home and family although Vesta is associated with very different themes. In astrology, it is associated with the following:

  • Devotion and dedication to personal beliefs
  • Spirituality
  • Service to others and personal sacrifice
  • Sacred rituals
  • Sexuality

The sign and house that Vesta is in can tell us how strongly (or not) we feel about the things that we believe in. Do we have a casual connection to our beliefs, or would we fight for them to be heard and taken seriously?

One of the most interesting things about this celestial body, is that it symbolizes sacred rituals. To my knowledge, these aren’t associated with any other part of the birth chart. Rituals also don’t seem to fit in anywhere among the themes listed above but they serve an important purpose in life for those who use follow them —whether consciously or unconsciously. From relaxing in bed with a good book and an herbal tea at night to smudging your home, these are sacred rituals which help to rebalance our energies and soothe us. So it may interest you to examine this asteroid if for nothing else, to gain some insight into some rituals that you might especially enjoy.

Pallas

This asteroid is the third largest in our solar system. Some astrologers and birth chart calculators refer to it as Pallas Athena as it was named after the ancient Greek goddess Athena, known for her feminine wisdom, smart strategic warfare, and creative prowess.

While many of the other asteroids and comets are associated with love and romance, this asteroid is all about intellect and female wisdom, intuition, and intellect. More specifically, it symbolizes the following:

  • Intellect and wisdom
  • Problem solving
  • Strategic planning and decision making
  • Justice and fairness
  • Feminine power
  • Arts and crafts

Eros

Whatever sign or house Eros is in, in your birth chart, it is said to influence the following:

  • What personality types you are attracted to
  • What type of physical features and body shapes attract you
  • What you enjoy doing in the bedroom
  • What you think and feel about erotic desire
  • How you view attraction generally
  • How you express your romantic and sexual desires

Eros (Έρως in Greek), was the ancient Greek god of love and physical attraction. It’s more representative of your carnal appetite, rather than what you might like in a long term partner. Think flings and holiday romances, I would say. That being said, there is absolutely nothing stopping someone you fancy the pants off of, and have been enjoying a casual relationship with, becoming your husband or wife. Eros, along with many other components of the birth chart, such as Sun, Moon, Venus and Mars, just shows us what we might like to get us going (sexually, as well as starting new relationships with others).
