How to Start Your Journey as a Professional Astrologer in 2025

I’ve always been fascinated by astrology. As a child, I found anything related to the heavens utterly enchanting. I like to think that I was destined to become an astrologer and most of my previous work was just killing time until I unearthed the courage to start working in astrology. Finally, in my twenties, I found it and I started giving chart readings. Many moons later, Stars & Paths Astrology was born.

How to Become an Astrologer

Honestly, it may be a great deal easier than you might think. I should preface, however, that you should truly believe in astrology and feel passionately about it in order to pursue it as a career because making an income in this field isn’t easy.

If you aren’t besotted with it, and you don’t think you’ll get a good return on your investment in the field, you may understandably lose hope and interest. I think you need sincere passion to keep you going until you find some degree of success with it.

Any lingering doubt you may have concerning your success as an astrologer should also be done away with. And certainly stay clear of those who are likely to call you potty for pursuing it as a career until you find success! Negative talk can steer you away from pursuing your passions.

Plenty of people are carving out careers in esoteric fields today with the help of the internet and social media. Why shouldn’t you? In fact, if you really feel like you can contribute to the field and help people, why take that away from the world? Isn’t that being selfish?

What’s Your Personal Motivation for Becoming an Astrologer?

Before we dive in, I’d like to ask you why YOU would like to become a full-time, professional astrologer. If the answer is ultimately that you want to help people discover more about themselves and those around them, I think you’re all set. If it’s purely for monetary gain, it may not work in the long run.

People can sense how passionate you are about your work, and if you’re doing it because you genuinely care about others by the way you communicate. Getting involved because you love it and desire to make the world a better place will help you to establish yourself and, hopefully, make a decent living from it.

Which Astrological System Resonates With You?

You might need to think hard about what type of astrology suits you the most. Listed in order of popularity, these are:

  • Western
  • Vedic
  • Chinese
  • Hellenistic

Of course, you don’t have to be Chinese to study Chinese astrology nor Indian to study Vedic astrology. People all over the world study and practise the various different systems.

I have a friend who practices the Chinese system and she hails from Ethiopia. It just depends on which one resonates with you the best and which one you think you would like to work with for many years, or decades, to come.

What Area of Astrology Would You Like to Specialize In?

  • Horary
  • Natal
  • Election
  • Relationship (synastry and composite)
  • Psychological
  • Evolutionary
  • Mundane

There are other areas but these are the most popular.

Take a Course

The first and most important step is to learn about all of the individual components that make up astrology; the signs, the houses, the planets, the other celestial bodies, the aspects, and so on. You could do this by reading a large number of books and/or undertaking a long or short course.

The second step is knowing your way around a birth chart. This is much more complicated than it sounds because there is so much going on, and the patterns are often very different. If you’re on a course, you’ll be taught how to do this, and without having a teacher or tutor guide you, it may be very tricky to learn.

Becoming qualified in the field can only be a good thing and help you become established faster. Here are some courses which you might like to consider:

Faculty of Astrological Studies

The Faculty of Astrological Studies (established in 1948) is seen as the gold standard of astrology courses in Great Britain.

Kepler College

Kepler is the most well-known institution for astrology, worldwide.

Other Courses

There are courses sold by individual, well-known astrologers like Debra Silverman.

There’s also a degree that can be taken: Cultural Astronomy and Astrology (Full-time) (MA), run by the well-known astrologer, Nicholas Campion.

Keep on Practising

If you can, read the charts of friends and family for free. Then read them again. If they have any specific questions, such as when they’ll meet their significant other, learn by putting together a comprehensive answer to their question as you would if you were already a pro. It’s fun and over time, your knowledge in the field will grow and grow.

Continue Your Self Study

I think it’s a good idea to continue reading astrology books and other astrological publications you find interesting. For example, last summer I read a lot of zodiac cooking and fashion books!

Join Communities Online and Offline

There are so many groups online. There are also groups such as meet-ups.

How to Help Others and Make a Living by Working as an Astrologer

Most astrologers charge anywhere between $20 and $300 for a single birth chart reading. Professional astrologers tend to charge at the higher end. I’ve even seen readings (of various kinds) go for up to $400 each. The more you know, the more you’ll be able to share with your sitter/querent (client), and the more you’ll be able to help them.

If you aren’t comfortable charging hundreds of dollars, pounds etc, you don’t have to. I’ve never charged over $90 (about £80 today) for a reading, although that may change as my business grows and I bring in pro astrologers to conduct readings for clients. In addition, if you charge a reasonable rate, you’ll probably reach more people and therefore help more people and build a loyal following.

Methods of Monetization:

  • Birth chart readings These may be natal readings, composite or synastry readings, and so on depending on the type of readings you would like to offer. This is by far the most common way in which pro astrologers make a living, especially before the internet! I started out letting everyone I was close to know that I was studying astrology. I gave lots of free chart readings and because people were impressed, they spread the word. Slowly, I built up a client list. People would return for readings to help them deal with all sorts of different situations and on these subsequent visits, I would charge.
  • Printed books and e-books to sell online
  • Audiobooks
  • Courses Once you have become a qualified astrologer you may wish to create courses of your own to sell online. Plenty of professionals do this to share their knowledge and grow their income.

These four avenues of income alone can bring in plenty of money if executed well. Normally, this entails having a website of your own, if nothing else to advertise your services and let others read about you. If you have a website, you can also place ads on them and that can be another income stream.

You should also be on social media. This is so important. Just make sure that when starting out, focus on just a couple of the most popular platforms so you don’t spread yourself too thin. Make the most out of them and then before long you’ll be able to move onto the rest. You can invite your followers to join you on the other platforms too, which means you won’t have to start with zero followers on them.

When it comes to people finding your website through search engines, I’d focus on the three main ones: Google, Bing, and Pinterest. YouTube is also a search engine, but for video/audio content, of course. If you have the courage to record your voice or you’re happy to film yourself, that can also serve as a very powerful way to bring traffic to your website — some of which can, of course, be converted into sales!

Pros and Cons of Being an Astrologer

Pros

You’ll be living your highest joy!

If you’re truly passionate about astrology, you’ll love your job, which isn’t something that everyone can say. You’ll wake up each morning, raring to go. You will be living the dream and helping people at the same time.

Enjoying what you do for a living can also help with your overall happiness. Numerous studies have shown those who are genuinely happy with their jobs tend to have an overall higher quality of life than those who don’t. Some studies have even shown that such people live longer.

You also stand to make a name for yourself. Astrology isn’t a hugely saturated field. Because there are so few individuals working in it, you stand a greater chance of forging a name for yourself which means a greater following on social media and more clients.

Cons

People can react strangely to your new career.

Over the years, I’ve received some very positive reactions and some dismissive reactions from people when I told them what I do. Some people just don’t get it. I’ve also received a fair bit of criticism.

One person reacted especially badly by telling me that what I was doing was unethical because I’m essentially tricking people into believing nonsense. When people ask you what you do for living, as they tend to, be prepared for mixed reactions!

Ethical Dilemmas

Sometimes, as an astrologer, you might be put in a difficult position. For example, someone might ask for a synastry or composite chart reading, which means looking at someone else’s birth chart. But, you may not have their permission to study their chart. Do you use it, or don’t you? If you can obtain permission from other other person, sure, but you may have to decide what feels right for you before you proceed.

In addition, synastry/composite chart readings may show many difficult aspects. Giving guidance on serious life choices may be tough as you can influence the steps they take in life. I find that consistently focusing on the positive parts of a reading, and emphasizing free will choice, can help manifest positive outcomes.

The Sort of Income You Can Expect to Receive

It sadly took me years to make money as an astrologer. I’m only just now making money from this website. As with most subjects, you have to study in depth in order to share helpful, accurate information with others.

I couldn’t have started earlier because I wanted to be certain that the information I was sharing through on my website was correct, and therefore, for the highest good of my readers.

Even once you start working in the field, you need to figure out how to make an income of some description. Yes, you can have a website, but how will you monetize it? I’ve mentioned some ways above and there are many more besides but you must pick one or two and really persevere until you make the sort of income you need, and that can take time.

If you don’t want a website, or feel it would be too hard or expensive to create, at least in the beginning of your career, consider starting a YouTube or TikTok channel sharing your knowledge and offering something for sale like a book or a course — or sell birth chart readings if you feel confident enough.

I’m sure that there are some extremely wealthy astrologers out there, especially those wealthy enough to invest in app creation, but most people just sell things like chart readings or horoscopes, and while this can be lucrative, it can take some time to see the income you desire, especially if you’re collecting memberships. But that doesn’t mean that it can’t happen! It may just take some time.

Continue your Learning Journey

Astrology is an ever-changing field. Make sure you keep up with the transits, moon phases, and any new ideas and understandings in the field. You can do this by signing up to the newsletters on your favorite astro websites, reading the latest, most anticipated astro books, and taking courses on the subject now and again. I’m sure that most, if not all, of the astrology academies around the world also have newsletters that you can sign up to to stay updated.

Good luck on your exciting journey. If you have a question, please feel free to drop it in the comment box below. I’d be happy to help.
