Do Zodiac Signs Even Matter?

Personally, I think that zodiac signs matter if you think they matter.

Most people, regardless of the country they live in, don’t pay an awful lot of attention to astrology, despite its huge increase in popularity since the late 1800s.

A lot of people aren’t even aware of, or interested in finding out, what their star sign (Sun sign) is! If it doesn’t matter to the majority of Earth’s population, then, arguably, it shouldn’t matter too much to anyone because it isn’t relevant in the grand scheme of things.

For those of you who are on the fence about astrology and the twelve zodiac signs, I’ll offer some reasons below as to why they may or may not matter.

Astrology Hasn’t Been Scientifically Proven

Unlike in previous times, we live in a time where most things, understandably, have to be proven in order to be accepted as being true.

And as much as it pains me to say this, astrology lacks scientific evidence to back up its claims.

While some quick studies have probably been carried out here and there on the validity of it, there really isn’t much research that has been carried out. So it’s easy to understand why so many people are quick to dismiss it.

Personally, I think astrology has merit and that’s why I write astrology articles every day for Stars and Paths! But this isn’t based on my review of the evidence in favour of astrology’s validity as there isn’t much. My belief in it is based on my intuition telling me that it’s real.

Cultural Variation

When someone mentions their astrological placements, for instance, Gemini Sun, Libra Moon, and Aries Rising, a lot of people find that information completely meaningless.

Although, the probability of that increases or decreases depending on where you are in the world because some cultures believe more in astrology than others. In the West, astrology is largely dismissed as woo-woo, but in the East, it’s widely acknowledged and valued.

Of course, the systems used to calculate Sun signs and others astrological placements vary throughout the world. Western astrology is a bit different to Vedic astrology, and Chinese astrology is entirely different to Western and Vedic astrology. These variations between astrological systems also raise questions about the universality and applicability of astrology.

Our Individual Differences

Because astrology isn’t a proven science, it’s wide open to interpretation. And interpretations can vary greatly.

For example, two people may view the same sign very differently. Whenever I think of the sign of Cancer, I first think of introverted, sensitive, thoughtful and sweet-natured folk. One of my close friends who is also an astrologer, would beg to differ, though. She sees Cancer as a bold entrepreneurial sign that can be ruthless in its pursuit of success.

Of course, each sign has many different facets to it, but generally, a bold, emotionally cool entrepreneur isn’t what first springs to my mind when I think of a Cancerian. If people’s interpretations of the individual signs can vary so hugely, it raises the question of what’s true about them and what isn’t.

We Manifest What We Are Rather Than What We Want

Some people, especially those who are a part of the New Age movement, believe in the Law of Attraction. This law states that what you believe, you manifest in your physical reality. If this is true, then our star signs may not matter at all. How could they?

I’ve observed too many people give away their personal power away to their horoscope by believing that whatever Pluto or Mars is about to do will negatively impact them for the year. Personally, I think that we’ve a lot more control over of our lives than some astrological interpretations lead us to believe. I believe that we all have the power to change any part of our lives as and when we see fit.

Star Sign Compatibility for Romantic Relationships

People study astrology for all sorts of reasons but the main one is to help them understand themselves better. But plenty of people also want to find out what makes others tick in order to win them over and score a relationship with them.

The thing is, most people rely too heavily on Sun sign compatibly when there is so much more important information contained within any given birth chart.

Additionally, two people with similar birth charts may behave very differently owing to factors like upbringing, education, and the beliefs they hold. So one could argue that zodiac signs, at least, when it comes to Sun sign compatibility, really don’t matter much at all. And on that point, they’d be quite right really!

Past Lives May Also Influence Us

Some of my readers believe in past lives and some don’t. Those who do normally agree with the idea that we’ve all been born under all of the Sun signs at some point. If not, we probably will be in the future. In addition to this, some people, like myself, believe that everything is happening all at once because the present moment is all that exists, and that incudes all of our incarnations.

If this is true, it means that we all have different bodies with different personalities right now and they’re all having their own unique experiences. In this case, no single Sun sign could ever entirely define us, because each of our incarnations would bring its own unique traits, making the zodiac just one lens through which to possibly view ourselves and others.

It’s Your Behavior That Ultimately Matters

Star signs can bog us down by telling us that we’re like this, not that. No matter what your star sign is, it’s how you behave that ultimately matters: how you respond to different situations and people, how self-aware you are, and how open you are to change.

There’s a set of positive and negative traits associated with each sign and the implication is that we cannot act outside of these traits. But, this isn’t true because we have free-will.

We can change anything we don’t like about ourselves thanks to being the masters of our own lives. For instance, plenty of people were raised in poverty but grew up to become millionaires as a result of them putting in the effort.

I’m sure that people born under all of the twelve zodiac signs have lead equally remarkable lives. Lots of people have overcome various obstacles and challenges, including dealing with difficult people, by making an effort to see things from the viewpoints of others.

In addition, from an astrological standpoint, the majority of us of have many different signs in our birth charts. Many of us resonate with these other signs—be it our Moon sign, Rising sign, sign on the second house cusp, or whatever, and draw from the energy of that sign at times. So, the use of astrology in everyday life really is quite flexible.
