I’m a Taurus but I Feel Like a Gemini – Why it Happens
When I was in much younger, I used to be an avid follower of a particular popular YouTuber who made hilarious videos reviewing all kinds of products and telling interesting stories about every day life. I was sure she was a Gemini. She embodied so many quintessential Gemini traits; she was quick moving, quick thinking, quick speaking, funny, bubbly and articulate. But her birth chart revealed that she was a Taurus!
She did, however, have Mercury, the planet of communication, intellect and thought processes in Gemini. She also had a Gemini Moon. The 10th house of career was also in Gemini, creating an interesting, lively, bubbly and chatty public persona. So, no shortage of Geminian energy there.
I’ve always found it really interesting how we can behave so differently from our Sun sign. But I think it also clearly illustrates the subtleties of astrology. It’s a vast and complex subject and while the Sun sign is a crucial part of the chart, it is just one part.
So, it really doesn’t surprise me when a client tells me during a chart reading that they strongly relate to another sign. The placemats of the planets are also just a part of what makes someone feel one way or another. There are, in actual fact, many other astrological (and non-astrological) explanations why this could be. In this article, I’ll elaborate on these.
Mercury’s Influence
Did you know that one third of Taureans have Mercury in Gemini? If the Sun is in Taurus in the birth chart, it’s only possible for Mercury to be located in the same sign, the one before, or the one after. So around a third have Mercury in Gemini.
Since Mercury closely orbits the Sun, its astrological influence is particularly significant. In astrology, this planet acts as a kind of filter for all the thoughts you have. It colors them as they come about. It also rules over intellect and influences your communication style so people with Mercury in Gemini tend to think and communicate in a Geminian manner.
The Moon’s Influence
A lot of people are surprised to discover their Moon sign differs from their Sun sign. But after some reflection, it begins to resonate with them and make perfect sense. For instance, if someone has a Scorpio Sun sign but discovers they have an Sagittarius Moon sign and notices that they’re expressive, sociable, and extroverted, this quickly makes sense to them.
The Moon sign can really change the energy of a chart, and consequently, of a person. If your Moon sign is Gemini, then it’s no wonder you resonate with the sign of the chatty twins. Other signs which share personality traits with Gemini are Virgo, (co-ruled by the same planet, Mercury), Sagittarius (the opposite sign on the zodiac wheel), and the two remaining, and equally vibrant and loquacious air signs, Libra and Aquarius.
Third House Influence
The third house is associated with the sign of Gemini. The more personal planets located in the third house, the more you might feel like a Gemini. This is especially true of the Sun and the planets closest to it, i.e. the personal planets, or the big five, as they are collectively referred to. Third house dominant folk tend to exhibit Geminian traits. The sign on the cusp of the third house will also influence the way you communicate and think.
The Influence of the Remaining Personal Planets
If a particular planet is prominent in the chart, the more influential it will be. This tends to be more the case with personal planets, although it can also extend to the generational (outer) planets. If Mercury is prominent, then you might feel rather Mercurial. Since this planet rules both Gemini and Virgo, you could exhibit some of the traits associated with both of these signs.
The Influence of the Rising Sign or Ascendant
The rising sign, or ascendant, influences your outward behavior and how you experience the world around you. It also influences how other people perceive you, especially before they get to know you well.
Those with Gemini rising might notice that they’re especially curious, sociable people with a thirst for learning all kinds of things — sometimes all at once!
Since the rising sign also governs physical appearance, those with this ascendant could be quite willowy in appearance with long, slender arms and fingers. They might even have a high forehead and sparkly eyes. They may act and move in a nervous, quick way too.
Calculating the rising sign can be tricky though. This sign changes every two hours so you need the exact time of birth. Estimating it by putting it at roughly sometime late morning, for instance, won’t be very helpful. It’s also worth noting that exact birth times can also be taken down incorrectly resulting in a different rising sign. This happened to me!
Astrological Transits
The planets are always moving and affecting our birth charts as they do. Various different celestial transits can activate Geminian energy in our charts, making us feel more in tune with the sign’s qualities.
Your Relationships With Family Members
The relationships we have with others can greatly influence us. If you grew up in a household where a lot of people had Geminian energy, you probably learned to think like them and emulate their behavior. We do this as children automatically to fit in. It’s a survival mechanism.
As we age, we naturally begin to individuate and develop a more significant sense of self and heightened self-awareness. As an adult, you might notice that you picked up some traits and habits of those you were close to as a kid, like your parents and siblings.
Friends and Social Circles
Last but not least, your social circle could be packed with people who are talkative, witty, clever and upbeat and know a little about a lot (all Geminian traits!). We tend to share similar traits with the people closest to us and when we get together, those traits often become magnified.
