Natal Moon in Aquarius: The Rebel Heart of the Zodiac

Over the past few decades, the sign of Aquarius has gained a reputation for being emotionally cold and distant but that just isn’t the case. At least, not in my opinion. Aquarius is far from unemotional as I see it. Luna Aquarians feel deeply and can be surprisingly sensitive. Diana, Princess of Wales had this lunar sign and her extraordinarily sweet, kind and compassionate gestures are still spoken about the world over! In its highest form, Aquarian energy is wise, gracious, kind-hearted, empathetic, authentic, and keen to help virtually anyone in need.

Personality Traits

I don’t think I’ve ever met an average person with an Aquarius Moon. There’s always something remarkable about them. Some are even complete eccentrics. And in a world where so many people seem quite similar, their originality is, I think, very refreshing.

I’ve noticed that initially, these people often appear quite aloof or reserved but they’re actually far more friendly, sensitive, and intuitive than they let on. They usually have people ‘pegged’ pretty quickly and only trust those they know very well. For instance, their family and close friends see their vivacious, friendly and caring side.

Knowing themselves well, they are often unapologetically authentic. No matter how unpopular their opinions are, they feel compelled to share them without hesitation. People often seem to admire their self-assuredness and strength of character.

Emotionally, they can be unpredictable. Sometimes you just never know what you’re going to get, and sometimes, even they don’t know how they’ll react to certain things! Overall, however, their temperament is normally pretty even and they’re capable of looking at situations objectively, especially when they feel relaxed.

As with Sagittarian types, the bigger picture is often held in mind, especially if they’ve gained a lot of wisdom over time. Many of these natives possess a rather philosophical outlook and understand that everything in life is transient. Few experiences and interactions truly matter, especially petty slights. And their humanitarian side appreciates that everyone experiences some degree of difficultly in life — that’s just an inevitable part of being on Earth.

Injustice weighs heavily on them, and I’m not just talking about wider issues like racism. Local problems like animal neglect and antisocial neighbours concern them too. When they identify ways to improve their local community or the world at large, they enjoy taking action. Doing so makes them feel useful and they just love facilitating tangible change.

When they feel they have been wronged, their sharp tongues become apparent and they have the ability to give good verbal thrashings. Additionally, owing to the fixed nature of the sign, and the fact that it likes to go against convention, these people can dig their heels in and stick to their opinions without even wishing to hear those of others. That said, if the dominant quality in their chart is mutable, they will be a great deal more flexible. The dominant quality in my chart is fixed and I have this Moon sign, and my views can occasionally be very difficult to change. I realise this is something I must work on.

They are also prone to occasionally playing devil’s advocate to shake things up, open people up to different viewpoints, or prove how different they are.

Home Environment

Home is a sanctuary which allows them to hide away from the world and recharge their delicate nervous systems. Their home therefore needs to be quiet, comfortable, and secure yet also a place where discussions and get togethers of all sizes can be enjoyed as they’re very sociable — when they want to be. Company from very different people is relished. Even if they are wealthy and well educated, they will still want to keep company with anyone who they find interesting, no matter what their background is like. Their friends and acquaintances may be shocked by the sheer amount of different types of people they know!

As I mentioned earlier, I have this placement and I probably have the most diverse range of friends out of all the people I know. Many of my friends and acquaintances are much older or much younger than me, are different races, sexual orientations, are from different countries, and come from different socio-economic backgrounds. I much prefer this to keeping company exclusively with those who are very similar to me, although I enjoy their company too!

Although they like to entertain, these people are also extremely private. They only ever invite people into their home they know and like. Some people with this placement prefer solitary living so as not to sully the vibe of their home with the energy of others.

Being an air sign and therefore very mental, these people must mentally unload often in order to feel balanced. A room in their home that’s full of things to help them to relax and process their thoughts, like a room full of vibrant crystals, pleasant scents, and gentle music could be of great benefit. Meditation, writing, painting or practising tarot also helps soothe their overactive minds. This sign really thrives on learning new things just to enrich itself and expand in awareness so literature on subjects that interest them can also provide relaxation and escape.

Work and Career

Some old astrology books state that Aquarius is almost exclusively interested in the sciences and engineering. I disagree. Virtually any career will appeal to this lunar sign because Aquarius is interested in a very broad array of subjects. It mainly likes to know how things work, including people. And the more challenging the subject is, the better, as this placement absolutely thrives in mentally stimulating occupations.

Lunar Aquarians are known for going against the grain so some work in fields that go against societal expectations, especially if Aquarius is in the 10th house of career. This could include running an online business of some kind that touches a lot of people. If they see fit, they could harness the power of social media and possibly create an income through it. Aquarius is also keen on mysticism. As a lunar aquarian, I run this astrology website for a living!

At work, they find it impossible to ignore unjust treatment of themselves and others without voicing their objections. They are proud and logical and need to be treated with fairness and respect in the work place and beyond.

Aquarian energy is vital to furthering and freeing humanity especially now that the age of Aquarius has begun. Aquarian types know how to live and tend to have a good work-life balance. Having said that, these people can become very stressed and spend lots of time worrying and overthinking if they don’t feel secure in life.

Hobbies and Interests

They usually have one foot in the future so virtually anything futuristic interests them. This is also the sign of the inventor so creating or redesigning things interests them. They also enjoy getting lost in deep discussions with friends or contemplating matters by themselves.

Social and community projects make them feel as if they’re making a significant positive change in the world. I have this placement and I often feel all warm and fuzzy inside when I think about starting a business selling items that somehow help the planet and allow me to donate to my favorite charities.

Friendships

Friendships mean a great deal to them. After all, this is the sign that governs friendship and as such, all meaningful connections with other humans, and society at large, are important to them. They do need authentic friendships though, otherwise, they’ll have to move on and look for it elsewhere. Connections can also be felt with nature, animals, plants, trees, and so on. Sometimes these people prefer to keep company with a few select people and their pets rather than other humans.

Thanks to their well developed intuition, they can accurately sense who they’ll have lasting connections with and who they won’t. Too much judgement, insincerity or disloyalty breaks their connections for good. There may be a number of abrupt changes within their social circle during their lifetime because Aquarius also governs sudden change.

Aquarian types are always happy to help a friend out with any issue — as long as it isn’t overly emotional. They’re usually the first on the scene with logical, genuinely helpful advice. It helps if the person they are offering their advice to is open to dealing with their issue in an objective manner. Nothing will be expected in return for their help. In fact, it might make them feel uncomfortable if their kindness is strongly rewarded.

Relationships

Life around someone with this Moon sign is never boring — their snappy wit, zest for life, off-beat humour and knowledge on a wide variety of subjects makes them brilliant company.

Whilst fervently independent, they know that the right relationship can be a wonderful, life-enriching experience. As long as these people have enough freedom, a longterm, monogamous relationships can suit them well. But they rarely settle down just because society says they should. As they see it, rules and norms are stifling and their nature is to push against them. They’ll only settle down with the right partner — and no one else.

Those who possess strength of character, intelligence, self-assuredness, kindness and are unusual in some way interest them the most. And their partner needs to be their best friend and share their outlook on life to a large extent.

Idealism can sometimes cloud their judgement when seeking a partner so when a love interest says or does something they disagree with, they can find it challenging to overlook. Boredom is the ultimate killer however, and if the interest in their partner begins to fade, their willingness to remain with them does too. Feeling trapped or bored is largely unacceptable. They should work with their partner to keep their dynamic interesting.

When it comes to compatibility, pop astrology says Sun sign compatibility is everything, but astrologers know this isn’t the case. The Moon, Venus, and Mars placements are very important too, as is the 7th house of marriage and the synastry aspects. With regard to Moon sign compatibility, Aquarius does well with the other air signs — Gemini and Libra — and the freedom loving fire sign Sagittarius.

Parenting

This is one of the energies in the zodiac that leans towards a childfree life mainly due to the big responsibilities and restrictions that invariably come with raising children. Aquarius is freewheeling and absolutely cherishes its autonomy. If they do become parents, it’ll probably be because they really wanted to be one.

Being a sign that enjoys defying convention, they might decide to create a family by themselves through adoption. Or perhaps via fostering. Not all of these people meet the right person at the right time, so they might like to set up their own cozy single parent unit. And why not? More and more people are deciding to do so and society doesn’t snub single parents as much as it once did.

As parents, they want their children to become responsible, polite, ethical adults who contribute to society in some form or fashion. For example, through their work, by being a great parent themselves, or perhaps by donating their time to a cause. Others might raise free-range kids and may not be too concerned with directing them. They may want them to experience a great deal of freedom from the burdens and social norms of adult life which is something they may not have been blessed with in their own youth.

As fun and freedom loving as they are, they can be rather authoritarian and expect their offspring to obey and respect them, although they know that respect is a two way street and must be earned.

At times, they might feel trapped and overwhelmed by their responsibilities as parents. Perhaps they didn’t grasp just how much of their freedom and autonomy would be reduced by having babies.

Of course, not everyone with a natal Aquarius Moon is humanitarian, ethical, friendly, and caring. Since we live on planet of duality, some people express some of the less desirable traits associated with this placement. Such traits include unpredictability, eccentricity, and volatility. Most people, however, aren’t all good, or all bad — they’re a mix of both.

Upbringing

This Moon placement describes two different types of mother (or primary caregiver). One is modern, liberated, independent, clever, quirky, and original. She accepted others for exactly who they were without question. She was broad-minded and allowed her children more freedom than the next parent. She allowed her beloved offspring to experience the world and learn from their experiences and mistakes. A good education was at the top of her agenda as she wanted her kids to become articulate, independent, principled adults.

The other type of mother is eccentric, erratic and at times, emotionally unavailable. She may have been absent physically. In some cases, those with this placement feel like their childhood was unfulfilling or somewhat unconventional. Of course, there are many degrees in between these two extremes.

Either way, there was something rather unusual about this native’s upbringing and/or mother. And even if life at home was positive overall, some emotional distance may have existed between mother and child and perhaps other members in the home too.

Lastly, I should mention that this placement is regarded as somewhat difficult with regard to upbringing and many people born under it complain of a missed childhood where they felt alone or more like the parent. It may be that the Soul chose to experience a difficult upbringing to help it grow in some way. Whatever the upbringing was like, as a child, these natives may have dreamed of living away from the family home to enjoy a greater degree of independence.
