Aquarius Sun Sign: The Freewheeling, Offbeat Innovator

Cheeky, friendly, quirky, funny, and cerebral, Aquarians can make you smile and laugh while imparting their wise advice. Their outlook on the world and everything in it is often totally unique, and they may encourage you to see things from completely different angles.

Aquarians are some of the most original people in the zodiac. They don’t fit in any box, and they march the beat of their own drum —and others can take them or leave them as far as they are concerned. As an astrology enthusiast, you are probably aware of the fundamentals of this fascinating and highly intellectual sign, but just in case you aren’t, here they are…

The sign of Aquarius, despite containing the Latin word for water, aqua, isn’t a water sign, it’s an air sign. It is, however, depicted in astrology as the water bearer which is a person, usually a man, pouring water out of a large vase. This is to represent the act of imparting knowledge and wisdom upon humanity, and indeed, many Aquarians are very wise and enjoy assisting individuals as well as humanity at large. 

It’s a fixed, masculine sign an its ruling planet is Uranus. Uranus is the planet of innovation, eccentricity, and unpredictably. The traditional co-ruler of the sign is Saturn, although astrologers are divided on whether Saturn still co-rules. The date range is normally January 20th to February 18th. This is the shortest range in the zodiac system and that makes it the rarest of signs.

Admirable Attributes

The intelligence and critical thinking skills of Aquarians are something to be admired and respected. These people are some of the least likely to accept things as true without witnessing them first hand. They are more likely to go away and research things for themselves and study plenty of credible sources in the process before they arrive at a conclusion. They like to remain objective in most situations and see things from many different perspectives rather than take sides without knowing all of the facts. They will then go with whatever they deem is right, even if it goes against what everyone else thinks.

One of the most refreshing characteristics about Aquarians is how authentic they are. They know themselves well and they are often secure and comfortable enough to speak their minds without being worried about what others might think. They are strong supporters of free-speech, and freedom generally. So, if someone doesn’t like what they have to say, they know that is to be expected because we are all different. They don’t mind having unpopular opinions, or listening to them, unless they are hateful or prejudiced. They just want their thoughts to be heard and taken on board. Although, sometimes they enjoy going against the grain to shake things up a bit and keep the conversation going. 

Some of the most eccentric people in the zodiac are born under this sign or have it located somewhere prominent in their chart. So, their style might be different along with their every day thoughts and outlook on life. They might be part of a sub-culture like goth or steampunk, or live another type of alternative lifestyle. A friend of mine with Aquarius Sun and Moon bought a canal boat a few years ago. It took her years to renovate but now she’s all settled on it. She makes her income on social media by posting videos of her life on the boat and it clearly fascinates people because she has close to 400k subscribers! It’s heart-warming content and as a lunar Aquarian myself, it warms my heart to see more and more people “stick it to the man” (a 1960s phrase which alludes to exiting the establishment) and create an income for themselves through unique and creative means!

Aquarius is associated with networking and friendship, so they tend to be highly sociable. They really enjoy meeting new people from all walks of life and forging new friendships. They may, however, have more acquaintances than close friends as can remain a little distant, especially with those who they aren’t sure about. Getting too close can scare them off a bit, often for reasons even they can’t identify. It’s likely to have something to do with desiring to remain totally free-range and avoid becoming too weighed down by the energies or issues of others. 

They often furnish their friends with genuinely useful advice in challenging situations. In their circle of friends, if they have one, they are very likely to be seen as the first person to talk to for different kinds of assistance. They love to be helpful, but what makes their help so different is that it’s often remarkably clever. They tend to view life a bit differently and and such, come up with smart ideas that most people would never think of. 

While there is absolutely no doubt in my mind that they feel genuine affection for their friends, their first love will always be humanity; our species at large. This is because they are very aware of the fact that without our beloved, fertile planet, none of us would have a home at all. Consequently, they enjoy making the world a better place, socially, environmentally, or both. They are kind towards strangers, campaign for justice and equality. They do all they can to take care of the environment, and keep their carbon footprint as low as possible in the process.

Water signs are said to be the most intuitive in the zodiac, but personally, I have observed individuals born under all twelve signs displaying excellent intuition. Aquarius is no exception. They can be remarkably intuitive. I have found this to be especially true when it comes to assessing the personalities of others. Because of these, they people might call them excellent judges of character.

Being fair minded, they don’t discriminate against people who are different to them. If they do now and and again, that would be because they are only human. They find it extremely distasteful when they observe others being prejudiced, though. They are especially kind and pleasant towards members of minority groups because the feel different themselves so they can relate to their plight to some extent.

Areas for Personal Growth

Thanks to the unpredictable nature that is associated with the sign’s ruling planet, Uranus, these natives are prone to unpredictable behavior, and sudden changes in mood. Sometimes, they also react strangely, and it’s their strange reactions to things which helps some of them earn their reputation as oddballs or eccentrics. Even they might not know why they react in an odd manner sometimes. It’s just how they are wired. Sometimes, they can be full on eccentrics, living lives far removed from the societal norms of their time.

Being of fixed quality, their opinions may be immovable and they may think in black and white terms. I think that we’re all black and white thinkers in some areas, especially when we feel very strongly about something and we want to convey our thoughts on the matter, but we might not be so interested in what those who oppose us have to say. It’s just that the fixed signs (Taurus, Leo, Scorpio, and Aquarius) seem to be more affected. All of these signs have very firm likes and dislikes, and they aren’t afraid to let others know, which can come off as a bit too direct now and again.

Aquarians can also be tremendously idealistic. They often have strict ideas about how people should think and act, rather than accepting that people will behave as they see fit. Similarly to Leos, their standards for situations and people can very high. As a result, they can appear demanding on occasion. They may complain a lot to those around them about the behaviour of youth, society, friends, neighbours, co-workers, and so on. They can’t understand others why people would choose to behave badly. They especially dislike anti-social behaviour and find it virtually impossible to tolerate.

As friendly, kind, bubbly and funny as they can be, they can also be emotionally cool and distant. They do this to preserve their energy as they are very sensitive to the energies of others. They also need they own space, and getting too close to people can unnerve them. If they are upset they tend to withdraw quickly and keep their distance. They are prone to suddenly cutting people out of their lives if they find them too difficult to deal with.

Physical Appearance

Being a strongly cerebral sign, Aquarians often have large foreheads. Their hair tends to be a little wild, reflecting their rebellious spirit, and because this is an air sign, their limbs tend to be quite long and sometimes, a bit spindly looking, similarly to Geminis. Their hair is often quite fine, no matter its colour. Like Leo, the opposite sign on the zodiac wheel, their shoulders tend to be quite broad. Many of these people also seem to be quite tall and statuesque. They can come across a lot of the time as light-hearted but quietly confident and self-assured. 

As a Partner

Aquarians often enjoy living with their partner without officially tying the knot as they don’t really like to be tied down. In order to marry, they need to be completely besotted with their partner, and intuit if they are right for them in the long run. As a husband or wife, these people are humorous, kind, understanding, supportive, and oftentimes, their romantic relationships appear more like friendships.

No matter what gender they are, these people must have plenty of physical, mental, and emotional space in their marriage. You’ve probably heard of ‘man-caves’ but Aquarian women need their own space to hide away for a bit by themselves. They relax by doing things like journaling, crafting, or playing video games. If a room of their own isn’t possible, then a quiet space in a room might also work well.

Their partner may also be unconventional in some way. Or their relationship might also be unconventional. Examples of this include being married but living apart, having an open marriage, or having a much older or younger partner.

They can be a lot more interested in discussing numerous different subjects rather that figuring out if there is chemistry between them. As far as they are concerned, chemistry is important, but the mental connection needs to be there first. Without a good mental connection, nothing can move forward as it’s the most important thing to them. 

They like people who are calm, open-minded, and intelligent with excellent critical thinking skills. People who are highly original as well as authentic are particularly attractive to them. Those who are clingy and insecure stand to turn them off and send them running —their personality doesn’t normally bode well with neediness.

As a Parent

Being cerebral, Aquarian parents are keen to teach their children as much as they possibly can about the world around them. As a result, their children often grow up to be articulate with good general knowledge. Throughout her pregnancy, my Aquarian friend played classical music to soothe her child and introduce him to the genre before he even entered the world!

While they can be a bit stern and authoritarian with their children, they can also be delightful playful and cheerful with them. This helps the children know who is in charge and responsible for their well-being, and it also sends the signal that they shouldn’t fear their parent.

As a Fur Parent

These people feel deeply attached to their pets, and they love them dearly, but they also need some space. Cats really appeal to Aquarians because they go off and do their own thing. They are hugely free-spirited creatures. Even house cats normally find things to do by themselves. During their time apart, they can both relax and recharge.

As a Friend

Aquarius rules friendships and indeed, these individuals often make excellent friends, eager to help with their clever and original advice. They need plenty of mental stimulation so they love talking about all kinds of things, and that alone can help them to get closer to people and form lasting friendships. The fun never seems to end around them. They frequently go on adventures and encourage their friends to go with them. They also make brilliant pranksters! But they also know when the moment calls for seriousness and sincerity. They easily make new friends because they tend to be very sociable and enjoy the company of others.
