Mercury in Libra: Diplomatic Speech and Harmonious Thoughts

Libra wants everything in life to be fair. Of course, this is rarely the case; every day crimes go unpunished or poorly punished, wars rage on, people get away with treating their partners, children, pets, friends and neighbors badly, and so on. Mercury in Libra thinks this is all terribly unfair and seeks to obtain justice and keep things lighthearted and friendly wherever possible, especially if they were the ones who rocked the boat in the first place.

All is not fair in love and war and life generally, so there is a need to frequently rebalance themselves as they move through life. Luckily, as they age, they tend to become more grounded, self-assured, and skilled at arguing their points. So they know how to deal with the things life inevitably throws at them in a way that doesn’t disrupt their equilibrium too much or for too long. They learn to address challenging matters in a cool, firm and fair manner, helping them to feel better able to walk through life.

Despite Libra being of masculine quality and an air sign, and therefore known for being emotionally cool, these people can be rather easily thrown off balance emotionally in challenging situations. As intelligent as they are, they can be surprisingly sensitive, especially if their Sun sign is Scorpio, which it is for one in three with this Mercury placement. By no means does this mean they will be dissuaded from fighting the good fight and getting on with things, but it can mean feeling off, or just plain down, while they fully recalibrate. I’ve personally noticed that those with the Moon in Scorpio are especially affected by external factors like disagreements and find it difficult to cool off and let go afterward.

This sign is especially expressive so their communication can be long-winded and, at times, excessively flowery and/or emotional. Many of these natives are also plagued by overthinking and can go over things in their minds to the point where they tire themselves out. As a result, decision making can also take a lot of time and sometimes, if they can avoid settling on one conclusion, they will opt for that in order to conserve their time and energy. Other times, they just hope things will settle on their own, especially if it means avoiding conflict.

Tactful and Cooperative Communication

I find this a very curious and interesting placement. Libra is often seen as a sweet natured sign because if its association with gentle, beautiful Venus. When it influences quick, unemotional, and cerebral Mercury in the birth chart, an interesting concoction of sweet and considerate, yet logical communication, thought processes, and intellect is created. Mercury colors the way you think and so it has a significant impact upon personality.

These natives are also very good at seeing things from different perspectives. Unless someone is behaving very unfairly, they normally think it’s only right and good to take on board what someone else is thinking and feeling about things so they can reach the fairest outcome possible for everyone involved. Their points are usually put forward in a fair and diplomatic way so as not to disrupt their relationships with others, and leave them feeling they have been properly heard and understood. 

Being cooperative, they tend to get on very well with others and enjoy socialising. Whatever they do for a living or in their spare time, they probably enjoy doing with others; whether that’s in person or via the phone or internet. But preferably in person, and in a fun and or interesting location. They just have a special way with others and as they’re particularly good with their words and think rationally. Many of these people can make new friends and acquaintances with remarkable speed because they’re just so charming, clever and rational. And their connections tend to blossom and last a long time because they pay a good amount of attention to them.

Sometimes, like all of us mortals, they think they’re right and dig their heels in. Of course, feeling you’re right and actually being in the right are two very different things. If they feel they’re right, they’ll fight their corner and make themselves understood; Libra is an especially eloquent and intelligent sign so they can do that very well indeed. But, on the odd occasion they aren’t right, or can’t see something from a different viewpoint, they can become snappy and defensive and in worst case scenarios, litigious, as Libra governs law.

If the Sun sign is Scorpio or they have strong Scorpio placements in their chart, it’s unlikely they will easily back down. They’re especially skilled at using their words with precision — and they often know exactly how to make an impact. Someone I knew had this placement and as smart, fun and friendly as she was, she could occasionally become surprisingly cutting towards those she felt were being unfair towards her or others.

An Astute Intellect

Picking knowledge up, keeping it, and being able to utilise it effectively is very much their strong suit. They aren’t the sort of people you saw in college slumped over their desks, barely awake and zoned out during their lectures. No, no, these people pick everything up. Sometimes, even if they’ve barely been mentally present. They’re just naturally especially sharp and observant.

But I think you’d do well to note that everything these people learn from the world around them passes through the Libran filter of checks and balances. Before filing any new information away, they automatically try to determine whether or not it’s correct and fair. Like items on the scales of justice, data is weighed up and analyzed. It’ll then be filed according to their personal perception of it being fair or not. If it isn’t fair, they cannot help but address it and try to make it right. This is why those with this placement might often find themselves in intense, and occasionally heated, debates in formal settings like universities, and deep conversations with friends and family.

Refined Taste

Politics, social activism, and the law are of particular interest to them — especially if they think they can personally make a difference by engaging with, or working in, such fields. Aesthetically beautiful things tend to interest them. The arts, fashion, music and literature are all loved by them. Many people with strong Libra placements, including this one, forge exciting and stimulating careers in creative fields or law. Those with Libra or Virgo Sun signs are especially likely to be interested in creative careers and/or pastimes.
