Natal Moon in Scorpio: The Alchemy of Emotion
Oh, the enigmatic ways of Scorpio! Those with this lunar sign are really something to write home about. I’m lucky enough to have plenty of people in my life with this Moon sign and most of them embody the traits and characteristics associated with the higher levels of Scorpio; that is, the wise, dignified Eagle and the beautiful mythical bird, the Phoenix (the most spiritually developed version of the sign).
Delving into their world is akin to unlocking a mystical and all-encompassing realm of emotion and desire, and those who take the time to understand and get close to one of these natives may be rewarded with a beautifully deep and meaningful connection that just lasts and lasts.
General Characteristics
Scorpio is arguably the most mysterious, intense, alluring and, oftentimes, confusing sign in the zodiac system owing to its depth and complexity. If you mention that you have a Scorpio Moon to someone who is familiar with astrology, it might evoke equal feelings of intrigue, respect and fear, making them a tad cautious of you.
Alexander the Great had a Scorpio Moon. He was just one man and a mere 5’6”, and yet he conquered a good part of our planet! Such is the strength of character of these natives… Many warriors throughout history have had Scorpio as a prominent energy in their birth charts. Being co-ruled by Pluto, the planet of the underworld and (traditionally) Mars, the planet of war, these natives are die hard and overflowing with passion, intuition, and all shades of complex emotion.
Yet despite this sign’s popularity, it has historically suffered from a very negative reputation which I think is very unfair considering how many decent Scorpio types exist today and in the past. Just like all the other eleven signs, Scorpio has its good and bad traits so there really isn’t anything to fear or dislike…
In fact, at their very best, those with strong Scorpio energy in their charts are fiercely loyal, brave and unwaveringly supportive. They make dedicated friends, partners, family members, teachers, healers, and psychics.
They’re the people who’ll be with you, come hell or high water, through your darkest and brightest times. Because they experienced intense emotions and events themselves, they have the understanding that’s needed to help others through their own hard times. This sign absolutely embodies the phrase “ride or die”.
There’s often a dense air of mystery and otherworldliness about these people which effortlessly draws others in. But you might never really know where you stand with them because they keep their cards so very close to their chest to guard their sensitive inner selves.
Unless there are strong earth placements in the chart, their actions are largely dictated by their feelings which are often so complex, they might not be able to understand them themselves.
Remaining calm and collected in heated moments isn’t so much their strong suit and outbursts of intense emotion should be expected. However, if helping someone they deeply care about, they’ll quickly pull themselves together so they can give them their absolute best.
Their intuition is so well developed that to them, their feelings can be facts sometimes. And while they may not always be right, they seem to be a lot of the time!
When growing up, they may have experienced a lot of emotional turbulence due to their fiery, passionate and complex nature and sadly, they were probably misunderstood quite a bit. They also grasp that there’s a lot more to their existence than this life alone and find it hard to connect to others who don’t share the same inborn knowledge, and perhaps also, extra sensory abilities. Their ability to easily connect to their inner knowing would help them to make a good intuitive professional like a tarot reader or medium.
As a lover of rich, passionate life experiences, they strive to bring in as much income as they can in order to lead a fulfilling life. They love beautiful items, clothing, rich food and travel. It’s their love of life that drives them to become successful.
They could come across as very expressive if they have a lot of fire or air or fire in their chart. If water or earth dominant, they could be quite shy and reserved.
The not-so-nice side of this placement includes a tendency towards manipulation for personal gain, pathological secrecy, hypersensitivity, and a need for control and even domination. They may also see things as all good or all bad.
Additionally, Scorpio is generally purported to possess a tremendous amount of spiritual depth but it isn’t the case for everyone with this Moon sign. I know a few people with this Moon placement and while they almost certainly have strong feelings, they’re still decidedly more self focused than philanthropic.
Being so emotionally sensitive and possibly spiritually open, I’d personally advise plenty of high quality time alone for these natives. It’s exceptionally important for anyone with a water Moon (Cancer, Pisces or Scorpio) to get regular space, especially if their charts are water dominant.
My advice on handling anyone with strong Scorpionic energy is to approach them without fear. Instead, endeavor to be respectful, self-assured and authentic when getting to know them, if you can muster it. I know that’s a tall order but I think it’s worth the effort because frequently, these people are wells of wisdom and mutually intense experiences seriously add zest and color to life.
They admire people who are confident, sincere and brave enough to just be themselves and not give a fig about what anyone else might think. They also long to connect with others who have emotional and preferably, spiritual depth. Their best connections mean the world to them. Little else in life brings them as much fulfilment, stability and happiness as their meaningful and mutually supportive relationships with others who are equally intuitive and sensitive.
Upbringing
Their mother, or main caregiver, was especially influential in their life. She was an expressive, emotional, outspoken, fiercely supportive and loyal person. Her long list of responsibilities were never far from her mind and she always had plenty of time for her child, especially when helping out with matters of the heart. She enjoyed directing her child thorough life just enough to ensure they became well equipped for adulthood and successful in their chosen career.
That said, many people with this placement would have experienced exceptionally challenging childhoods for one reason or another. In some cases, their mother (or primary caregiver) wasn’t physically present due to death, illness or abandonment. Or else they weren’t consistently present due to divorce, work or some other factor which left their child feeling neglected. In other cases, they may have been in her her life but were difficult, too busy, or just emotionally unavailable.
Either way, nothing got past her; she knew instantly if her child was bending the truth and almost everything they did was closely scrutinised. My cousin has a Scorpio Moon and his mother (my aunt) had a seriously keen sense of when he was lying! When he was fifteen, she caught him climbing over the garden (yard) fence to go to a party at a friend’s house nearby. Even though his bedroom door was locked, she somehow knew that he was mid-escape! Her intuition was that good…
Interests and Hobbies
Tolerating the same schedule day in and day out is unbearably boring for these people. Enjoying the company of someone special, experiencing love and intimacy and generally having exciting and varied experiences make them feel alive.
Although they tend to have plenty of physical energy and pack their lives full of emotionally charged, fun and mystical experiences, they also need lots of peace and space to gather themselves, process their many deep thoughts and feelings, breathe, let off steam, and recharge. They can’t do that in a demanding, fast-paced environment so having somewhere they can chill out like a quiet meditation spot, craft room, or reading area should help.
Water is particularly emotionally healing for these natives. They like being in it and looking at it. If they can also find some time to swim or soak in a warm bath with some aura cleansing Himalayan salt or deliciously scented bath bombs, and gentle music of a high vibration, all the better.
One of the things they need most in life is for their fiery and intense nature to be properly understood and not misinterpreted. Those closest to them must gather that their character is emotional, sensitive, passionate and rather complicated. But there’s nothing they dislike more than being seen as out of control or overemotional so they do their best to stay composed.
Scorpio is a water sign and when it combines with the energy of the Moon, a planet ruled by another water sign, Cancer, intense emotion is born. Many people with this placement are empaths. This means that they are prone to picking up other people’s energies and experience them as if they are her own which can be draining and confusing. So, they’ll consistently need good quality downtime to cleanse themselves emotionally and spiritually and recharge their physical body.
Friendship
Their need for intimacy and meaningful, soulful connections with others ensures they have plenty of wonderfully stimulating relationships and friendships throughout life. They fiercely guard themselves and their loved ones but jealousy and possessiveness can sometimes get the better of them.
More than anything, in all of their connections, especially their close ones, they look for sincerity, understanding, depth and loyalty. They might be a little too intense for some folk, especially those whose charts are air or earth dominant. They need to feel a spiritual connection with their closest friends and trust them to have their back and understand their beautifully deep, spicy and sensitive inner nature.
Luckily, they calm down and eventually let go of any wrong-doings. At worst, they simply ignore incompatible folk. While bitter and everlasting vindictiveness was heavily associated with Scorpio in previous eras, humanity has spiritually evolved a great deal since the creation of the zodiac system thousands of years ago. Some particularly negative traits are therefore no longer prevalent among the signs.
Unlike Gemini Moons, they can’t be friends with just anyone, let alone close friends and confidants. People have to prove themselves to be trustworthy, loyal and compassionate before they can be considered inner circle material!
Dating and Relationships
It’s important to consider a person’s Venus and Mars signs as well as examining the 7th house of partnership when trying to understand their behavior and preferences in romantic relationships. These placements lend valuable insight into their values, desires, and approach to love and intimacy.
Dating, or just getting to know someone with this lunar sign can be a little challenging and confusing at first. Due to their great need for secrecy, which they feel protects them, it can be hard to get too close too quickly. And if they feel in any way disrespected, they may withdraw even more. It takes a reasonable amount of patience and genuine interest to get close to them.
If they like someone very much, they may become overwhelmed by their own feelings and proceed with extra caution so as not to get hurt. This could look like they’re blowing hot and cold from an outside perspective but they’re just protecting themselves. They might not be consciously aware of this behavior.
In a secure, mutually respectful and loving longterm relationship or marriage, they can be absolutely wonderful. Their strong need for intimacy helps them to bond with their partner and being so incredibly loyal, they’re extremely unlikely to look elsewhere for gratification. Mind you, they give as good as they get so they will absolutely let their partner know if they’re slacking.
Parenting
Forever the hyper vigilant and hyper protective parent, they are determined to see their offspring carve a safe and preferably, successful, path in life so they can look after themselves — and them, when they’re all grown up.
Although they wish for their children to become healthy, happy adults, they might find it hard to let them fly the nest to have their own experiences and lives. They worry about them a great deal and feel a need to continue directing, advising and taking care of them even later in life.
They’re the sort of parent who can “sense” things. They effortlessly read the air. Their life motto in life could run along the lines of “I just knew it” owing to their outstanding intuition. And indeed, their intuition is often proven right. This makes it very tricky for their kids to fool them!
