I’m a Scorpio but I Feel Like a Sagittarius

Most people don’t know much about astrology and yet if you were to ask them what their ‘sign’ is, they’d be able to tell you. Even my lovely local plumber knew he was Pisces. He didn’t even pause to remember it because he knew it off by heart. Yet, for most people, that’s where astrology begins and ends — with the Sun sign.

I think a lot of people, especially the ones who relate better to a different zodiac sign, would be interested to know that the other planets in the chart, like the Moon and Mercury, are often located in different signs, and carry a great deal of weight. With so many signs contained within the birth chart, and some in very important personal planets, it’s no wonder why so many people feel differently than their Sun sign.

Saying that, there are many other reasons why some people might feel more like the swift centaur archer than the nimble, deadly scorpion. Here are the most common ones I’ve encountered as an astrologer.

Mercury in Sagittarius

Many Scorpios have a Mercury in Sagittarius. In fact, roughly a third. Mercury follows the Sun closely so it’s only ever in the same sign as the Sun or one sign away in either direction. For instance, someone with a Leo Sun sign can only have Mercury in Leo, Mercury in Cancer (the sign which comes before Leo), or Mercury in Virgo (the sign which comes after Leo).

Since Mercury rules thought processes and communication (among other things), it’s no wonder why some Scorpios feel more like Sagittarius — all of their thoughts are being filtered through the lens of Sagittarius!

Check Your Rising Sign

The Rising sign (also referred to as the Ascendant or, less commonly, the first house), plays a very important role in the birth chart. It’s the sign that was rising above Earth at the time of your birth. It governs your overall outlook on life, how others perceive you, as well as your physical appearance. Plenty of amateur and pro astrologers alike consider it to be the most important parts of a birth chart. Personally, I think it’s just one of the most important parts, but it goes to show how crucial it may be considered.

So, if you haven’t already, check what sign the first house was in at your exact moment of your birth. Additionally, check if the ruling planet of Sagittarius, Jupiter, is located in it as that will also influence your personality significantly. The second house is also quite important, although a little less so. It can be viewed as an extension of the first house and so the sign that it’s in, and any planets located within it, will also be influential.

It should be noted that the signs located on the cusp of each house will vary depending on the house system used. Most Western astrologers, including myself, only use the Placidus system but there are many others you can use to calculate the houses. Check which house system the calculator you’re using to calculate the houses is showing. You might want to try a few different ones and see which results resonate with you the most.

Moon in Sagittarius

A lot of people don’t know what their Moon sign is, and yet it’s such a crucial part of their birth chart. I have to confess, though; I didn’t know anything about my natal Moon until I was in my late teens, and I had been an avid reader of Sun sign horoscopes well before that…

The Moon in astrology is considered a planet and it’s viewed by many astrologers as being equal to the Sun in terms of importance. It governs some vitally important areas of life including one’s emotional nature, instinct, intuition, deepest needs and desires and domestic life. It also governs the mother or primary caregiver.

If you haven’t checked your Moon placement yet, you can find out where the Moon is in your birth chart by using an online birth chart calculator. It may be in the sign of Sagittarius. If it isn’t, check the house that it’s located in — the 9th house is linked to the sign so it will color the areas of life ruled by the Moon with its energy.

Both Signs Have Things in Common

There are a few traits which are shared by Scorpio and Sagittarius. One of the most prominent traits is how remarkably, if not shockingly, direct both of them can be. With the exceptions of Aries and Leo, I don’t think there are any other signs in the zodiac system which are quite as brutally frank in their communication. Neither sign minces or sugar coats its words.  What they think, they speak, and never mind how well received their words are.

Both signs are also tremendously passionate and animated. Both want to live their lives to the absolute fullest extent possible. They share an unquenchable thirst for life that is only rivalled by the fire signs Aries and Leo and the indulgent earth sign, Taurus. And the more intense their experiences are, the better. Enjoying all this beautiful planet has to offer makes them feel like they’re truly alive and getting the most out of their time here. love going on all kinds of wild adventures, and learning new and thrilling things about places and people in the process.

Personal Planet Placements

Even if your Moon, Mercury or Rising sign isn’t Sagittarius, you may have other planets in the sign, or they may be in the 9th house, which is linked to it. The “big five” in astrology comprise the ‘personal planets’ Venus and Mars as well as the Sun, Moon, and Mercury. If just one of them is in the sign, or the 9th, that will help color your personality in some regard, to some degree. This is especially true if the planet is heavily aspected; the more connections it forms with other planets, the more influential it is.

The Birth Chart Has a Lot of 9th House Energy

Some birth charts have more energy in a few houses rather than the energy being spread evenly across the houses. If you were to get a birth chart reading done by a pro astrologer, they should point out which houses are dominant in your chart. Since the 9th house is linked to Sagittarius, that could be why you feel the energy of the sign a little more than the Sun sign you were born under.

Are You Sure You Aren’t a Sagittarius?

The dates for each sign vary now and again. Even if you think you are a Scorpio, if you were born on November 21st or 22nd, you may be a Sagittarius. Make sure you use a popular online birth chart calculator to confirm your Sun sign. If you were born right on the cusp, be sure you have the exact time of birth. Just one minute more or less could mean a different Sun sign.

Other Explanations

In this article, I’ve listed a few of the most obvious reasons you might feel more like the ninth sign of the zodiac than the eighth. But there are many more besides. For instance, being raised by, or growing up around Sagittarians. You may also have Jupiter or Sagittarius in the 3rd house, which governs thought processes, self-expression and communication.

If you’d like a thorough assessment of your birth chart, I would definitely advise you to find a local, reputable astrologer who can help with numerous astrology related queries.
