I’m an Aries but I’m Shy — Why It Happens

“To be yourself in a world that is constantly trying to make you something else is the greatest accomplishment” — Ralph Waldo Emerson. I think this quote does a good job of illustrating how it really doesn’t matter what we’re supposed to be. And that it is, in fact, wonderful to simply be ourselves.

Personally, I’m friends with plenty an Arien and a few of them are indeed shy as well as reserved, sensitive and emotional. Going by pop astrology, that’s weird, right? How on Earth can one of the boldest, most forthright, self confident and outspoken signs be shy?! I always find it amusing when someone asks me why they don’t feel anything like their sign or they feel like another sign. Plenty of people use precisely this as an excuse to dismiss astrology but, in truth, we all have lots of different influences in our charts.

In fact, the personal planets are in different signs for many of us. Your star sign (Sun sign) may be the only planet located in Aries. The rest may all be in different signs. So, it’s really no wonder why you are an Aries but uncharacteristically shy —the birth chart has so much going on in it! But, understandably, you’d probably like a more specific answer. Below are some of the most obvious explanations.

Natal Mercury is in Taurus or Pisces

Mercury in astrology can really alter one’s character. In my opinion, it’s a vastly underrated personal planet. It travels very close to the Sun and because of its close proximity, it can influence how the core personality, largely dictated by the Sun, manifests. The sign and house that this tiny planet is in, and any aspects it forms with other parts of the part, affect your personality.

Mercury presides over intellect, thought processes and communication. It can be viewed as the filter through which all of your thoughts pass. It also influences the type of thoughts you think in the first place. Since this little but impactful planet never strays far from the Sun, it can only be found in only the same sign, the one before, or the one after. It cannot be found in the signs further afield.

If it’s in the sign of Taurus, your thoughts, intellect and overall personality will be coloured by Taurean energy. Taurus is a feminine sign, meaning that it’s sensitive and introverted. It’s known for its gentle and graceful nature. It dislikes any kind of inharmonious happenings and behavior. This sign strives for peace and quiet in every avenue of its existence. It can be shy and wary of others’ intentions. This sign needs regular soothing as its nerves can become easily frayed.

Much of the same applies to natal Mercury in Pisces. Pisces is also a feminine sign so it has a fair bit in common with Taurus. It’s also one of the most sensitive signs in the zodiac as it’s a water sign and water signs are known for their great sensitivity and need for privacy. This sign is easily hurt and can find social interaction stressful. This can make Ariens with Mercury in Pisces a bit cautious and yes, shy, especially in new situations and with new people.

Your Moon Sign and House

In astrology, the Moon is almost as important as the Sun. The Sun depicts your core personality but the Moon governs your emotions and your true inner self which others rarely see. Unlike Mercury, the Moon can be located in any of the twelve zodiac signs so there’s a great deal of variation among any of the Sun signs for this reason alone!

Because it’s such a vital part of what makes up your character, it can drastically color your energy. I think this is why it’s fairly rare for any of us to behave exactly like our Sun signs dictate. Only one twelfth of people have their Moon in Aries. For everyone else, their Moon sign will be in a different sign.

If your Moon sign is an earth sign (Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn) you’ll be cautious, steady, prudent, pragmatic and down to earth. You’ll need to live in a peaceful place, spend lots of time in nature, and feel stable and secure in all the avenues of life. If it’s in an air sign (Gemini, Libra, Aquarius), you’ll be intellectual, logical, and sociable. Air is a fragile energy, though, and air moons can become overstimulated. They need plenty of time to themselves in quiet places to process their many, many thoughts and interactions with others and recharge their batteries.

If you have a water Moon (Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces), you’ll feel very deeply, be emotional, cautious and very protective of yourself and your loved ones. The earth and water signs are the shyest signs. They’re the most wary of others because of how very emotionally sensitive they are. They feel they must protect their delicate inner selves from others who perhaps aren’t as sensitive as they are.

You Rising Sign

The Rising sign, or Ascendant, governs the first impression you make on others, they make on you, and the world makes on you. It’s the sign that is located on the cusp of the first astrological house. All of the houses provide us with in-depth information on all of the various avenues of life but the first is the most significant in terms of personality traits. So if your Rising sign is in a sensitive, introverted sign (i.e. an earth or water sign) this would compel you to view the world with greater caution.

Your Solar and Lunar Aspects

Seeing as the Sun represents our core essence, it’s easy to see understand how it can be impacted by the aspects it forms with other planets and parts of the chart. If the Sun forms many aspects with one or more of the sensitive planets —the Moon, Neptune and/or Pluto, these will influence how the energy of the Sun manifests in you. The same applies to the Moon. And please note that the trines and squares are the most potent aspects.

Your Other Personal Planets

Although the Sun, Moon, Mercury are very important planets, the remaining personal planets, Venus and Mars, the romantic duo, also hold weight. While Venus represents how we view ourselves and love ourselves and others and what we see as beautiful, Mars represents how we pursue things, what drives us, our gut instinct and sexual desire. So it’s important that these two are also studied.

With Sun in Aries, Venus can only be found in Aquarius, Pisces, Aries, Taurus or Gemini. If Venus is in Pisces or Taurus, the way you view yourself, relate to others and the world at large will be especially emotional. No one would be able to refer to you a philistine because of how passionately you love and appreciate the arts. Mars can be found in any of the signs, which further colors the energy of the Sun sign.

Mars in an earth or water sign softens masculine solar Ariens. In a fire sign, it may be strengthened, although in Sagittarius, it’s principally philosophical and contemplative about life. In an air sign, there’s a good deal of intellectual thought going on, and a logical, emotionally cool approach to the world and problem solving.

Past Personal Experiences

Astrology is just one thing that shapes us. I think it’s a big thing but one thing, nevertheless. Our personal experiences can also profoundly impact our lives and consequently, our personalities. You may have had experiences which made you feel a lot more wary of people. So, despite being an Aries, with perhaps even Mercury in Aries, you have learned to be cautious of others and this feels like shyness to you.

While Aries is bold, determined, pioneering, energetic and fiercely independent and I’m certain that you possess some of the traits associated with it, we’re all unique, no matter our star sign. For many reasons, including astrology being complex, most of us don’t behave like our Sun sign most of the time. And this is wonderful because it’s crucial that we’re authentic and accept ourselves as we are. It also means that within our species there is an enormous amount of variation in terms of character. So I think you should go ahead and be yourself and be shy — it’s a delightfully endearing trait anyway!
