Mercury in Taurus: Golden Thoughts, Grounded Words

And this was just one of many compliments he’s paid me over the years. Before this, he remarked on how incredibly healthy my teeth were, and how “stunning” my tired-looking handbag was. Over time, I’ve noticed that he compliments all of his patients — no matter their age, gender, outfit, or physical appearance. He’s a serial complimenter.

I knew his Sun sign was Taurus because he told me once, after I mentioned what I do for a living, and I suspected he had Mercury in Taurus because of his extra charming, complimentary nature. This time, he gave me his birthday because he wanted to hear what I could tell him about it. Indeed, he had Mercury in Taurus as I had suspected.

You see, these people automatically spot beauty; beauty in someone’s clothing or physique, beauty in natural formations, even beauty in something as mundane as a well-formed puddle in a park. They identify it virtually everywhere in people, places, and things that others view as perfectly run-of-the-mill.

There’s also a palpable sweetness about them but they certainly don’t have to look sweet — although some do (think Helena Bonham Carter who resembles a real life china doll). Many don’t, especially if they’re very tall, or whatever, but there’s a sweet sort of aura about them which I suppose emanates from them thanks to their pleasant and gracious mentality. Which brings me to my next point…

A Pleasant and Gracious Mentality

Because of Venus’ gentle, feminine, delicate influence, these people dislike arguing. While they might flare up in the heat of the moment, and charge like a bull, they tend to sorely regret doing so later. “Let’s not rock the boat”, is what my great-aunt with this placement used to say, and she really never got very cross.

In fact, I can count on one hand the times she did because it was so rare. Unless there other indicators in the birth chart, you’ve got to really push these people to make them argue with you or otherwise react negatively. Most of the time, they like to think placid, calming thoughts, and have charming, pleasant conversations and interactions with others.

Taurus doesn’t mind sayings like “slowly does it”, or “at snail’s pace”. Pouring over documents or working on things for hours on end, as long as those things really interest them, doesn’t bother them at all. Quite the contrary, in fact! If they’re studying something they’re really into, they’ll be happy to go at it for really long periods of time. While those with placements like Mercury in Gemini or Mercury in Aries tend to become restless and bored quite early on, these natives stay merrily focused come hell or high water.

They enjoy learning small details and creating things in intricate detail. Personally, as someone with Gemini rising, I can’t focus hugely well unless I’m writing astro articles for this site or working on another passion project. It would drive me nuts to work for long periods of time on something I’m not utterly obsessed with. Speaking of Gemini, about a third of these people have a Gemini Sun sign. And this combination is fabulous because they get all the benefit of Gemini — the creativity, inspiration, childlike curiosity, vitality, and youthful exuberance plus the focus, perseverance and realism needed to bring ideas and projects to fruition in good time because of the Taurean influence.

A Love for Tradition, the Home, and the Past

Taurus is a tremendously sentimental sign. It loves ferociously and is a total stickler for tradition, home, family, and the past — whether that it’s own past, lineage included, or society’s past. Subsequently, many of these natives spend a great deal of time thinking about, and planning for, their domestic life. They want the best for themselves and their loved ones. Who doesn’t, I hear you say, but they’re especially invested in building the best “nest” to feel safe, secure, and comfortable in for as long as they live.

They’re the sort of people who will happily spend the time photographing and videoing their loved ones to make sure they’ve saved plenty of memories of everyone, for everyone to share and fondly recall in the future. An old school friend of mine who had Sun and Mercury in Taurus loved photographing her pets and her parents and then choosing the prettiest frames for her shots. She also took a ton of photos of me, her old best friend, and our little friendship group. She sent me some of her old photos of us all a couple of years back and they were so much fun to see, even if they made me feel a bit sad for what had passed. This kind of hobby was pretty rare for a teenager in the 90s but nevertheless, it’s clear to me now that her sentimental Taurean energy was just doing its thing!

A lot of people with significant Taurus and/or Cancer placements in their charts are interested in history and vintage items, as both of these signs are strongly associated with the past. For instance, my favorite historical fashion YouTuber, Karolina Zebrowska, is a Cancerian, with Jupiter, the planet of career, good fortune and prosperity, also in Cancer. And Erin Parsons, my favorite vintage makeup social media star, apparently has a Taurus Moon.

Of course, when looking at what someone does for a living, the 10th house (aka the Midheaven) should always be examined but the influence of certain placements like the Sun, Moon, Mercury etc, are undeniable so the whole chart should be examined as everything is relevant when it comes to what someone does for a living.

Sincere, Firm and Intentional Communication

Since nimble planet Mercury rules mentality, essentially, it’s a significant part of who we are. It strongly influences personality. You can think of it as a colouring or flavouring that’s added to every one of your thoughts, ideas, and preferences! It also heavily influences the way you communicate. The way we communicate goes a long way to defining who we are and the gravity of our words can have a major impact upon others. These natives understand this completely.

So instead of talking for the sake of talking, they’ll consider what to say before they say it. Gemini Sun signs may be talkative, but when it comes to serious matters being discussed, especially work or romantic matters, suddenly, their words become well thought out, sincere, and impactful. They may also speak quite slowly and clearly when they want to add extra gravitas to their points so as to ensure they’re heard and understood well.

While what I’ve written so far is complimentary but let’s not forget that this is a fixed sign. Since fixed nature indicates being literally fixed, as in, staid, stuck, or stationery, their thoughts and opinions are pretty much immovable once formed with the exception of those with some mutable influence, which is highly flexible. The mutable signs are Gemini, Virgo, and Sagittarius.

If they feel very strongly about something, they absolutely won’t budge. You might find yourself fighting a battle that may never be won. But we can all eventually see things from different viewpoints. We’re all human after all. I think this placement just needs some gentle encouragement, and a gentle explanation as to why, or how, it could benefit them to be more flexible in their thinking. Then, they’ll be more amenable. Going hard at them will only understandably bring out their bullish side, and little to nothing will be achieved.
