Why Do Some People Dislike Astrology?
Astrology, when misinterpreted, can be dangerous. People can become so consumed by their horoscope that they can give away their personal power to the stars and their movements. Or they might think of themselves capable only of achieving whatever is associated with their star sign.
Additionally, they might think that owing to their star sign, or the other contents of their birth chart, they can’t change the things they don’t like about themselves.
None of these things are true but I think that it’s easy to see why some people bristle when they hear about astrology. As an astrologer, here are the most glaringly obvious reasons for why astrology isn’t everyone’s cup of tea…
Transit Interpretations Vary Widely
As I mentioned above, people can give their personal power away to astrology by buying into negative interpretations of transits. This is pretty horrible, to be honest because it can leave you feeling totally disempowered if you’re a real believer.
To use an example, recently, I had a reading with a psychic who was a fervent believer in astrology. I’d been having readings with her for nearly a decade and we shared a passion for it but in one reading, out of the blue, she advised me that Saturn was moving into Pisces and because she thought I had Pisces in the 10th house (I don’t-she got it wrong), I would experience a solid year of turbulence at work.
Her unsolicited advice dumbfounded me.
Aside from the fact that Saturn had been in Pisces for a while (she got the date wrong), my own interpretation of this transit was very positive! It did get me thinking though; if her other clients believed in astrology and they accepted her interpretation, they could have manifested an entire year of struggle!
Had I given my power away by believing her, perhaps I would have manifested the same thing.
While I believe that natal placements impact our personality, I don’t believe for a second that we are all entirely at the mercy of the planets’ movements.
This is for two reasons:
- We’re all lucky enough to be blessed with free-will choice.
- All transits have their pros and cons! So much so, that all of celestial movements just blend into one mass of pros and cons so one could argue that there isn’t much point in keeping track of them.
Even if we were to believe that the stars have the ability to impact us, why are so many interpretations negative?
When Mercury goes retrograde, too many people seem to believe that they will invariably experience some kind of hardship as a result. In actuality, Mercury going retrograde can provide an ideal period for reflection; a much needed pause allowing us to evaluate where we are, and what we could change to improve our lives.
It certainly doesn’t mean that you shouldn’t sign anything or that you’re highly likely to have cross words with your sister or boss!
We’re All Blessed With Free-Will Choice
As I mentioned earlier, we all have free-will. Life really is what we make it, rather than what Mars or Ceres might be doing today. You, as a divine being are your own sovereign, blessed with total free-will choice.
You might be slightly influenced by what’s going on in space, but you’re always in control of your own life! You are the sole director.
The Oversimplification of Astrology
Astrology enthusiasts don’t often possess the same level of knowledge as professional astrologers. So they can make fundamental errors such as assessing others according to their Sun sign alone.
For instance, in the past, when telling people I was a Leo, they would often make snap judgements about me. I’d get comments such as “oh, you must love money then”, and “Leos have enormous egos”.
I found these funny but also a bit annoying because, although they were normally meant to be funny, they were largely on the negative side. The people who commented didn’t seem to be aware of the vast amount of information contained within any given birth chart.
They made largely negative assumptions about people based solely on their Sun sign. Considering tiger reputation Scorpios have, I can’t imagine what they thought of them!
It Can Prevent People From Improving Themselves
Most of us have things we’d like to change about ourselves. Be might like to become calmer, more tolerant, or less people pleasing. If someone believes they can’t possibly change themselves because of their astrological chart, that won’t serve them. And that really is very disempowering.
We all have the capacity to change, no matter what lies within our chart. We just have to really desire the change and go for it.
To provide you with a personal example, I used to be super fiery and at times, a little too dramatic. I’d overreact in certain situations. I really didn’t like those things about myself and I decided I needed to change.
I put the work on and made it happen. It took a few years but now, I’m much calmer and challenging comments and situations tend to roll off my back. And that is thanks to my own free-will (and help from my lovely energy healer), that these changes were successfully implemented.
Manifesting Negative Events People and Outcomes
I believe in the Law of Attraction. You might too. If you do, then you might agree with the idea that we manifest according to the conscious and subconscious beliefs we hold.
If an astrologer tells you that there is something contained within your chart that won’t allow you to achieve something you really wish for, you could manifest that experience—if you believe them.
In this way, astrology can be seen as a bit toxic. However, no astrologer worth their salt would put someone off from achieving their dreams. We can all do whatever we want. We just have to put our minds to it. Astrology can serve as gentle guidance on how to attain the things we desire.
It May Negatively Impact Loved Ones
When I was growing up, I had a friend who was absolutely addicted to reading her horoscope. She read it every single morning and whatever it said was taken as gospel. Worse still, the horoscopes she would read verged on the negative. If they stated that she’d have a bad day, week, or month, she really thought she would, and so her mood would shift downwards.
I felt sorry for her but it was also frustrating to witness.
The hold they had over her was so powerful that they basically dictated the course of her life. That was, until she finally had enough of her own rollercoaster moods. Her wonderful parents helped her to break free from their hold, and by the time she left to start college, she was once again in control of her own life.
Having seen a good friend give away her personal power by allowing the stars to dictate her life, I can totally understand why some people might regard astrology as damaging. I can’t imagine how challenging the situation was for her parents.
Some People Just Don’t See its Value
Many people, especially those who don’t have a good grasp of the subject, think it’s pseudo science hogwash. This is completely understandable in my opinion. It is true that astrology isn’t an exact science. There’s no empirical evidence, to my knowledge, that proves it’s real.
