The Meaning of Earth in Astrology
In astrology, the three earth signs are, Taurus, Virgo, and Capricorn, respectively ruled by sensual Venus, cerebral Mercury, and reserved Saturn. All of the earth signs are of feminine quality (quadruplicity). Considering this, all three signs have plenty in common. Earth dominant people are exceptionally tough, both mentally and physically. They work extremely hard and they’re especially ambitious. They’re the sort of people who others rely on to get things done and keep the world running.
What Does the Earth Element Indicate Exactly?
Earth in astrology is associated primarily with literal earth, as in dirt, which is also called soil (in the U.K. anyway). It’s linked to a grounded, earthly existence and those whose birth charts are earth dominant will be naturally preoccupied with earthly matters. These people tend to value earthly things and matters a lot more than those whose birth charts are dominated the other three elements which are water, fire, and air.
Positive Traits Associated With Earth
The energy of earth is very literally earthy. So, it’s down-to-earth, grounded, pragmatic, and sensible. There’s nothing whimsical, ethereal, or idealistic about it. People who are earth dominant tend to work exceptionally hard, and are very practical and realistic about life. They don’t tend to get carried away with unrealistic ideas, unrealistic goals, or live in their heads.
While many are ambitious, and desire money and worldly possessions, their feet always remain firmly planted on the ground. They always have a realistic plan about how they will achieve the success they desire.
Some of the best advice one could ever get could come from an earth dominant person. They seem naturally capable of imparting wise, calm, and simple advice during hard times which is also perfectly actionable. An old friend of mine who had a Taurus Sun, Moon, and Mercury was extremely good at settling disagreements between friends with her simple, measured words. She was an absolute gem.
Negative Traits of the Earth Element
While they enjoy making money and buying beautiful objects to adorn their living spaces, they can also be a bit too conservative with their finances by spending too little. It’s also possible for them to hang onto things that are no longer remotely useful. Some earthy types may even hoard.
Taurus may be inclined to spend without reserve for the sake of entertaining, comforting, and impressing themselves and others. Virgo may not particularly enjoy spending much on themselves but more so on others, while Capricorn is inclined to invest in things that are so high in quality they will last for years if not decades.
Their beliefs are traditional, and sometimes, that can mean they aren’t too accepting of new ideas, concepts, and lifestyles. They may resist change including societal changes. This means they may run the risk of being left behind while others move on by accepting the changes occurring in society, some of which could be for the betterment of it.
What Earthy Types Enjoy
These people love being surrounded by nature, especially woodland. Most sedate natural locations appeal to them because they don’t really like being immersed in locations with a lot of action and noise. They also greatly enjoy physically connecting with nature. Grounding feels very soothing to them as do gentle outdoor activities such as forest bathing.
Colours for Earth Types
These individuals are particularly drawn to earthy colors including greens, browns, and grays. They’re also fond of hues that mimic the tones of natural materials like terracotta and clay. Many also enjoy the mesmerizing beauty of crystals, glass, and sea glass.
Plants and Herbs for Earth Types
These people are the most likely to have a deep appreciation for vegetation as it’s strongly associated with the earth element.
Taureans tend to have a special appreciation for roses, lavender, patchouli, mint, and thyme. Virgos tend to be especially enthusiastic about lemon balm, echinacea, and chamomile. They are also huge fans of trees! Capricorns tend to have a special appreciation for all kinds of delicate flowers as well as comfrey, burdock, sage, dandelion, and rosemary.
These are just some guidelines, though. No matter what earth sign someone is born under, they will likely enjoy many different herbs, plants, and other greenery.
Earth types often relish keeping plants around the home as well as items made from natural materials, including large items like furniture. A garden or small yard is also a must as they feel a fundamental need to remain connected to the natural world. If a garden or yard isn’t something they can afford, then a beautifully decorated and peaceful balcony that is alive and overflowing with plants and flowers might do the trick.
A friend of mine who has a Virgo Sun and Moon has artwork depicting trees throughout her home. She loves nature and is especially found of trees of all species. She sadly doesn’t have a garden or balcony because she’s saving to buy a home with one but compensates for it by packing her windowsills with pretty cacti, parlour palms, and miniature roses. She’s cutting down the days until she can spend her weekends planting and sipping tea surrounded by fresh air and natural beauty in her new garden!
