Natal Moon in Capricorn: The Steady Heart

Too often, the sign of Capricorn is portrayed as emotionally cool and social climbing. Contrary to pop astrology’s frequent take on Capricorn Moon natives, these people are not all champagne-swigging high flyers hell bent on increasing their bank balances and social status.

Such inaccurate portrayals fail to understand the complexity of this sign; there’s far more to this sign and to this lunar placement. Lunar Capricorns are frequently wise beyond their years, as tough as nails on the outside and emotional with a very rich inner tapestry on the inside. They’re also devastatingly realistic with a deliciously dry sense of humor.

General Characteristics

Capricorn is actually a very sensitive sign. People forget that this sign is represented by a frankly bizarre mythical half-goat, half-fish creature referred to as a ‘sea goat’. Of course, no such thing exists in the natural world. Some astrologers muse that the fish tail represents the watery side of the sign and water in astrology indicates intuition and emotional sensitivity. I agree with this interpretation.

The hardened facade associated with Capricorn is often the result of them finding it almost impossible to be vulnerable by discussing their true feelings, which make no mistake, are not only present but also strong and deep. They fear terribly that they will be seen as weak and be rejected or laughed at. And this is especially painful when this comes from someone they love and respect.

Unless there are other elements in the birth chart which allow them to be more expressive, like a Gemini or Aries Sun, they are inclined to keep most of their thoughts and feelings bottled up. They feel they must protect themselves but this can mean losing out on quality connections with others.

Letting go and just relaxing is hard but not impossible. Learning to cultivate a “what will be, will be” mindset may help them to take life easier rather than resisting the bad bits of it or allowing them to stick.

Considering all this, it can take quite a lot of time to really get to know someone with this lunar sign. They are remarkably private people. This private nature, combined with a cool, aloof exterior often makes them seem hard but this is so far from the truth. They are just pros at protecting themselves. 

Their views are somewhat conservative and traditional. If older, they might reminisce quite a lot about previous times when people dressed well, were well mannered and generally more respectful towards one another. They deeply appreciate good manners and considerate behavior. Their refined outlook also means refined taste. And often, they have a love of anything tasteful like classical music and the arts.

Stability and security are incredibly important to lunar Capricorns. There is no doubt that money is vital to ensuring their stability. So typically, these people place a great deal of emphasis on money and are usually very successful financially. 

Most people with this placement spend wisely and prefer to invest in things that will last a really long time, like expensive, classic pieces of furniture. They also normally consider their children and when making big purchases. When older and amply able to afford luxury vacations, they probably enjoy them more knowing that they have earned them via hard work and sound financial choices.

This placement can mean that they are particularly hard on themselves and sometimes, this due to having a difficult upbringing without much emotional support. When something goes wrong, or a goal is not met, they can take it to heart as they were taught that life is about being strong and successful and never relying on others to get things done.

Their outlook may be rather pessimistic at times and indeed, this sign can focus too heavily on the negative things in life. People might even see them as a little morose if complaining becomes a habit. And feeling down may also manifest judgement and intolerance of others. It’s important to understand that such behavior often stems from a tough childhood and possibly feeling judged and unsupported in their adult life too, even if that actually isn’t the case.

Something that I really love and admire about lunar Capricorns is their beautifully dry and sometimes sarcastic or acerbic sense of humor. They use it to pull themselves through all sorts of difficulties and make light of them too! Such a strong sense of humor may come as a surprise to those who view them as too private or serious.

Upbringing

This is one of the toughest Moon signs when it comes to upbringing. Their mother (or primary caregiver) may have been physically missing, perhaps due to divorce and losing custody, long working hours or even death. If physically present in their everyday life, they may have been overloaded with work and/or responsibilities. Or maybe they were just quite reserved. Either way, there can be an unnerving distance between caregiver and offspring, either metaphorically or literally. And such distance, if it existed, necessitated speedy emotional and personal growth.

If the natal Moon is well aspected, the mother figure was very likely a very prominent figure in her life. She was probably a strong-willed, hardworking, organized and ambitious person who made sure she was raising her child to be a confident, assertive, driven, and successful adult. She might not have been the warmest of mothers but she was dependable, practical and took all of her parental and household obligations very seriously. It was very important to her that her child got a good education and, as she saw it, the more time spent feeding her growing mind, instead of mollycoddling her child, the better.

Competency, self-sufficiency and efficiency were encouraged from a young age. As such, these people may go especially hard on themselves as adults when something goes wrong or a goal is not met.

Home Environment

As someone who was born financially savvy, they probably did all they could to secure a property purchase at a young age. It was never too early for them to make investments and investing in property is arguably one of the best investments one can make. These people move a good few times in their lives as they climb the ladder of success. They typically trade abodes for bigger and more beautiful ones in more exclusive neighbourhoods. 

Their home is a large investment and therefore, it’s normally well maintained. It probably contains stylish yet practical furniture that was probably very costly but should also last a very long time. Dark solid wood furniture is probably preferred. They may also enjoy collecting antiques. If so, these are tastefully dotted around the home in rooms where guests can see and appreciate them. 

Although they might feel compelled to live in a city to make good money and keep up with their social circle, these people also long to spend time in nature. In an ideal world, preferably one without money, they would choose to live in the countryside or at least somewhere with an abundance of space, clean air, greenery and trees. 

The theme of nature may be apparent in their home. Perhaps there is some natural wall art or dried foliage and flowers in vases here and there. Or they might enjoy displaying fossils and rocks.

Beneath their rather brisk and tough exterior, lies a deeply sensitive and romantic heart with a deep appreciation the classical arts. Expect to find some classical music albums and some of the more affluent lunar Capricorns may even own some stunning art work from famous artists. They may also have a bookcase (or even library!) brimming with classical and modern literature by successful and conscientious authors. Any investments in luxury goods like handbags may also be on display, mainly for their own viewing enjoyment but also as symbols of their success.

As much as they love their home and enjoy spending short periods in it, lying around in it isn’t for them. They feel that they should always be as productive as possible. Life isn’t something to be wasted; those dearest to them need to be taken care of, their home must be maintained and some kind of legacy needs to be left. So, if they aren’t at work, they’ll be working on a personal project or hobby, learning something, perfecting their cooking skills, cleaning and tidying, doing some DIY or something else!

Work and Career

Capricorn is known for its terrifically strong work ethic. Those with this Moon sign were born thinking of ways to get ahead in life; to excel in their chosen careers and to elevate their social status. Financial security takes precedence, second only to family. They have to feel secure in life and they must be able to predict where they are heading at all times. Uncertainty and the sheer prospect of being financially unstable terrifies them.

Unless there’s a significant amount of Gemini energy in their chart, they are the type of people who focus on one career and stick to it no matter how much they enjoy it. They don’t see the point in investing lots of time and money studying something or learning a trade and then swapping it for something else that they may or may not also become bored with. They view that sort of uncertain behaviour as wasteful and foolish. Additionally, as they see it, their mortgage and bills need to be paid on time and their responsibilities must remain fulfilled. Choosing a career that pays well and feels fulfilling should help them to remain happy.

Working their way up the career ladder is their plan from the outset. They are ambitious people. Rarely would a Capricorn Moon be content with languishing at the bottom of the career ladder. Every effort is made to get ahead. Working overtime and going above and beyond to impress their seniors comes naturally to them. 

Like the other Earth signs — Taurus and Virgo, order, routines and schedules are a must. They help them to be more productive and to squeeze the most out of each day including weekends and holidays if necessary. 

As long as a venture isn’t too risky, self-employment should work well for them. But they won’t leap into any business without an in-depth business plan. They are shrewd and won’t easily part with their time or money unless success is virtually guaranteed. They make respected, dedicated leaders who will do virtually anything to build a thriving business.

By the time these people reach middle age, many have accumulated some decent investments. Making wise investments while still young is particularly valuable for this placement considering how much they require stability. And although getting on the property ladder today is really tricky for most young people, it’s still possible and these lunar types are likely to find a way no matter what their savings may look like!

Interests

These people have a huge appetite for doing many things and learning all sorts of new things. That said, typical Capricornian interests usually include creating things to sell like jewellery, clothing, painting beautiful landscapes and portraits, woodworking and photography; especially erotic photography as this Moon sign is highly sexed. Today, their hobbies may also include posting high quality content on social media and getting paid via ads, promotions, or whatever else.

Protecting their sensitive and romantic nature, some of their pastimes might be kept well under wraps. Most people may never know that they are actually a talented musician, artist or writer for instance. Friendship

They enjoy the company of smart, educated, even-tempered and refined people with mostly traditional values. If they’re successful, or better still, famous, all the better! Being shrewd, they enjoy keeping company with those who are capable of discussing a variety of topics from politics, current affairs and business all the way to cooking and gardening

Being sensitive, private and reserved they don’t often feel comfortable discussing their personal circumstances and feelings in too much depth but they are happy to listen to others and console or advise them if need be. This is especially true if Aquarius, Pisces or Sagittarius is prominent in the birth chart. Their advice can be very wise, grounding and helpful.

Although they can be judgemental at times, they find this difficult to tolerate in others and, generally, they find discrimination distasteful. As a friend, they are loyal and sincere. These individuals can usually be relied upon come rain or shine. If they say they will meet you somewhere or they have agreed to help you in some way, they absolutely will. Flaking at the last minute is simply not something they do, especially as adults.

All of the earth signs and fixed signs are considered stubborn and Capricorn, being symbolized by the goat, is no exception. When dating, they aren’t the easiest people to read. Like Scorpio, they hold their cards close to his chest and put on a formidable poker face. They aren’t the type to rush into longterm commitment with just anybody. Being a practical and no-nonsense, their head rules their heart. As much as they might like to run off into the sunset with someone who they think is sexy and makes them laugh, they need more. 

When looking for a serious partner, they tend to seek out those who are composed, calm, well mannered, down-to-earth, intelligent, and in control of themselves. They need someone with whom they can build a life with and they’re happy to wait for the right person to come along. They need  someone who takes longterm commitment and life generally as seriously as they do. Security and stability are, above all, most important to them. So, although they absolutely must have feelings for her partner in order to enter into a committed relationship, they have a few other requirements which are probably dealbreakers if they can’t be met.

Taking this into consideration, dating someone with this lunar sign can feel like a job interview, especially in the beginning. As an ardent practical thinker, their partner must be financially stable and preferably going places — remember that the goat, the symbol for Capricorn, is always climbing. Ambition is important in a partner, as is determination. They will want to know what shape their date’s career is in right now, what their income is, and what plans they have for their career (and their date better have some realistic yet inspiring answers!).

You see, they view relationships with others as investments to some extent. And a romantic relationship, or certainly, a marriage, is arguably the biggest investment of time, money and energy, not to mention legal commitment, anyone can make.

They can find it difficult to open up and show their partner love through frequent hugs, kisses, compliments and flowers never mind grand gestures of adoration. Instead, these types tend to show affection via their unwavering loyalty, steadfastness and by doing things for their partner. This is considered by them as far more valuable, mature and sincere.

Once he’s married or in a committed longterm relationship, they will be all in. They are loyal, attentive, sincere, considerate and work hard to provide for their family as well as they possibly can. And while they aren’t particularly spontaneous, effusive, demonstrative (as I’ve just mentioned) or extravagant they go above and beyond to fulfil every one of their responsibilities. After all, as they see it, that’s what truly counts at the end of the day — and I think they’re probably right!

Parenting

They admire and respect people who are strong-willed, hard-working, determined and good natured yet not too emotional and they would ideally like their children to grow up to be exactly so. And if they’ve experienced a somewhat challenging or lonely childhood themselves, they would really want their children to become successful and self-reliant. They don’t wish for them to rely on their parent/s too much. But, they will always be there for their offspring even if they may come across as a bit distant, stubborn, or harsh at times.

No matter what, they work tirelessly to meet their responsibilities. Feeling like a failure as a partner or parent or whatever is just not an option and they would feel extremely hurt if someone were to accuse them of neglecting their obligations. 

That said, letting go, relaxing and playing with their children doesn’t come naturally yet with enough patience and practice, they can get the hang of it. After all, they are fully aware of how quickly children grow up and they don’t want to miss their most fun and magical years. When they let their guard down, they make wise, gentle and sweet-natured parents.

Education is so important to them. They wish for their children to become responsible, competent and successful. Above all, they are reliable and take their parenting seriously. For them, it’s akin to a job and they feel compelled to do it well, not only because of how caring for their children properly will help them but how it will also help others to see the lunar Capricorn as responsible, capable and mature.
