Virgo Sun Sign: The Thoughtful Perfectionist 

Hard-working, sincere, thorough and responsible, Virgo is one of the most sensible and grounded signs in the zodiac system. Virgo falls under the earth element, its gender is feminine, and its quality is mutable. Its ruling planet is compact, swift and cerebral Mercury. The colours associated with it are green, navy and white. Neutral colours like those found in nature (browns, greens, grays etc) are also associated with the sign.

It spans August 22nd to September the 23rd, although the range varies slightly. The constellation of Virgo looks like a woman and is represented as the virgin in astrology. This is not to be confused for someone who is chaste, though —Virgos are far from it!

Admirable Attributes of Virgo 

Doing the right thing is really important to those born under the sign of Virgo. They care about others and they especially enjoy taking care of their loved ones. Many of them work as peacekeepers in their families, communities and in the work place. They strive to keep good relations with those around them. If they find themselves in a difficult situation, they typically go out of their way to keep things civil and cooperative.

These individuals probably take their responsibilities more seriously than any other zodiac sign. They enjoy being organized, oftentimes with the help of lists and schedules to make sure everything they need to do gets done. They tend to treat their domestic life like a salaried job by keeping everything in order and being a responsible and thorough partner, parent, pet parent, roommate, care-giver etc. Even if they live alone, they take their home life seriously and strive to keep their space clean and tidy.

These natives also make fabulous, hard-working, sensible and honest employees. They consider it their personal duty to go above and beyond to help the people they work for in order to been seen as useful and competent and eventually move into a more senior position.

One of the things that I like most about these people is that they are some of the least gullible people around. They have terrifically good nonsense detectors and rarely accept gossip as gospel. They believe in what they personally experience above all else. If they aren’t presented with all of the facts about something or someone, they won’t just believe what someone says. They need to consider strong evidence in order to form firm conclusions.

Budgeting is another one of their strong suits and they are generally very good with figures. A lot of Virgos do well in careers which involve a lot of calculations like accountancy and engineering. Financially, they err on the side of caution and dislike speeding too much. They always aim to go for the best bargain and if they can get certain things for free, all the better. Of course, by no means does this indicate they don’t like to make money. They absolutely do. They just enjoy holding onto it too.

Like Scorpio and Gemini, they are highly observant and tend to spot things that pass others by. Because of this, they are much less likely to be fooled or used. They are pros at pointing out errors and flaws and if they think it’s helpful, they will share them with others. They also produce very well considered work and often make excellent analysts.

A lot of them enjoy the arts, especially paintings of natural objects and scenes like forests. There seems to be a particular interest in trees, leaves and birds. Whatever artwork they might produce, nature is often something they like to include in it.

Areas for Personal Growth 

One of the things that can potentially hold them back in life is their critical nature. These natives can be highly critical of themselves and others. Being highly observant, they tend to effortlessly spot flaws in people. Others might wonder what exactly it is that they are seeing, though, because much of the time, the flaws are only apparent to the Virgo. For instance, if someone who works with them has poor personal hygiene, you can bet they will be the first to notice and possibly comment on it too. It would certainly bother them a great deal.

These people are also the most worrisome (Cancer comes in as a close second). And they can worry about things that most people would never even think to worry about. Everything is open to worry about, as far as they are concerned, from the biggest of matters to the smallest. I believe this is one of their biggest downfalls as it prevents them from moving through life in a care-free manner. Constantly worrying about this or that can be utterly exhausting, not to mention a poor use of precious time. It may also affect their health. Stepping back and allowing things to unfold in the knowledge that things are going to happen regardless of their intervention could help them develop a more relaxed outlook on life.

Perfectionism is strongly associated with this sign. But this isn’t an entirely negative trait because it certainly has its pros and cons. On one hand, it can push them to achieve great things. On the other hand, it can prevent them from taking action and getting on with life. I have Mercury and Venus in Virgo and I am constantly scrutinising my articles for Stars & Paths. When I first started writing, I binned a good 40% of my work because I deemed it too flawed or boring for publishing. However, I eventually realized that by doing this, I was just wasting my time and preventing myself from getting ahead. I started publishing articles I viewed as less than perfect and made a lot more progress!

Virgo is also known for its fussiness. My Mother is a Virgo and she is fussy in almost every conceivable way! These people like everything to be just-so. Their bedroom has to be just-so, their physical appearance has to be just-so. In some cases, even their cutlery has to be arranged just-so. The the smallest of details really stand out to them and they frequently feel the urge to rearrange things so they look just right.

On the plus side, those who are prone to fussiness sometimes live in extraordinarily clean and tidy homes! It should be noted, however, that this isn’t always the case. Some people are pernickety about certain things and focus heavily on them, like keeping a spotless bathtub or area to prepare food, but the rest of the room or home is left by the way-side.

Physical Appearance

Their hair is typically thick and or wavy, no matter its color. If they are female presenting, there may be a gentle, maiden-type quality to them. Their eyes might be especially sparkly and a bit mischievous. Many seem to have oval shaped faces. Their personal grooming is typically spot-on so they are often well put together, and they look and smell clean.

They might prefer to wear a lot of green colored clothing or jewellery. The crystals peridot, malachite and green aventurine are particularly popular with them. When getting to know them, they often appear reserved. Some may even come across as painfully shy. Once they get to know someone better, though, they tend to open up a bit more, although they normally remain somewhat wary of others they don’t know very well or trust completely.

As a Partner

Marriage in their minds is something that is very much for the long-haul. It isn’t something to take lightly, and it certainly isn’t something to do on a whim. They truly understand the meaning of the old adage, “marry in haste, repent at leisure”. Their relationship needs to tick most of their boxes, and since their standards are very high, there are many boxes which need to be ticked before the wedding bells can ring. Some of these people may pick a partner who they think is the most sensible choice, rather than someone they feel passionately about because stability and longevity is so important to them.

Once they marry ‘the one’, they are loyal, steadfast, and caring. In their relationship, they tend to pull their weight and get things done. They may have written a list of goals they wanted to meet after they got married, such as buying a nice home, or starting a new business. This is one of the most hard working signs in relationships. If they occasionally find themselves lounging around, they probably won’t feel too good about it.

Dating

When it comes to getting to know someone new with a view to entering a relationship, they can be shy and nervous. They tread cautiously and take their time scrutinising every aspect of them, such as their character, habits, the type of work they do and their appearance. Their main turn offs revolve around laziness, poor personal hygiene, poor manners and low intellect.

Turn ons include a strong work ethic, cleanliness, loyalty and integrity. If their date wants to take their relationship further, they should share their realistic outlook on life and behave sensibly most of the time. Of course, that doesn’t mean that they shouldn’t have fun! Rather, they should just avoid vulgar displays, such as being too loud, drinking too much, using bad language and so on.

As a Parent 

Their children seem to be their number one responsibility and focus. If they feel like their standards are slipping, or that they are somehow letting their child down, they can be very hard on themselves. They might be critical of their own parenting and be a bit intense about doing everything just right. They want the best for their children but in trying to get them to be their best, they may become too critical of them.

As a Pet Parent 

This sign rules small animals so these individuals can feel as if their pets are an extension of themselves. Many feel as if they merge with their pets on a deep level. One of my Virgo friends often jokes about her senior tabby being her “familiar”– a witch’s animal companion, but I know that on an emotional level she feels very strongly connected to him.

As a Friend

A Virgo friend is a helpful friend. They tend to be gentle and considerate with their closest friends and always seem to be on hand to help which makes them feel like they are fulfilling the role of the good friend. They need to feel like they serve a specific purpose in all of their close friendships. Examples of this include offering their valuable, measured advice in certain situations or being supportive about their friend’s personal or professional endeavors. 

Other Astrological Placements

This section exists to remind you, my lovely reader, that the whole birth chart should always be taken into consideration when attempting to look into someone’s personality. There could be other placements in the chart which diminish the traits associated with Virgo. For instance, a Virgo with Mercury, Moon, and Rising in Leo could instead think and act very much like a Leo. So please bear in mind that the Sun, while a big part of your birth chart, it is still just one part.
