Sagittarius Sun Sign: The Curious Optimist
Forever the buoyant optimist, the Sagittarian bounces through life. Ambitious and energetic with a true zest for living, these natives burst through life rather than move through it slowly and cautiously. Anything boring is normally avoided like the plague.
These people are the philosophers of the zodiac. Many are also very spiritual but even if they aren’t, they are often devoted to doing right by people thanks to their strong internal moral compass.
Sagittarius is the ninth sign of the zodiac. It is the last fire sign. All of the fire signs (Aries and Leo are the other two) are masculine, meaning they are extroverted and action oriented. It is portrayed as the archer, and sometimes a centaur; a mythological creature that in ancient Greece was half man, half horse. The glyph for this sign is the archer’s bow and arrow.
The date range is November 22nd until December 21st, although this exact period is subject to change. It is a mutable sign, which means that it can be flexible in its outlook but also easily influenced. Planet Jupiter rules this sign. Jupiter is associated with expansion (of many different kinds), joy, positivity, optimism, personal growth, wisdom, generosity, good fortune and abundance. It rules the ninth astrological house of higher learning, spirituality and philosophy.
Admirable Attributes
Friendly, sociable and open-minded, Sagittarians network and make new friends with ease. Their friends admire their intellect and vast bank of knowledge, as well as their tolerance and worldliness. Their connections with others tend to last thanks to their positive attitude and their willingness to work through any issues. In todays throw-away world, I personally think this is a tremendously admirable mindset! It really is to be cherished.
One of their most remarkable traits is their unbreakable spirit. These people can be so intensely upbeat that you would be tempted to they could live forever and accomplish anything. And if not, no matter! Because they would still be thrilled to live in a beach hut. Everything is just all good in their eyes. Things just seem to magically pan out well for these natives. Luck is always on their side.
Their minds and hearts are ever expanding. Many are also interested in expanding their spiritual awareness by learning more about the spiritual themes that interest them. For instance, forgiveness, reincarnation, manifestation or the power of prayer. Not all Sagittarians are religious, or even spiritual, but there seems to be something a little otherworldly about them. People sense that there is a well of wisdom somewhere within them. More likely, they were born with some spiritual knowledge which they may share with others as and when the moment calls for it.
Being the perpetual learner, higher learning is something these natives tend to steer towards. While this normally entails a formal higher education at a college or university, for instance, there are many forms of higher education to explore in addition. For instance, learning a trade at a high level, or furthering the education they received when they were younger. I know a couple of Sagittarians who recently started totally afresh in their careers. For them, this meant going back to school to learn completely new things. While a lot of people shudder at the prospect of being surrounded by new people and new things to learn, they thrive in unfamiliar environments.
Since they need so much mental stimulation and lots of learning opportunities, their desire to try out new things and go on frequent adventures is very strong. Oftentimes, so strong they can barely sit still — literally! They are constantly on the move. Travel abroad and short trips in their country alike strongly appeal to them.
Similarly to Gemini, the opposite sign on the zodiac wheel, these individuals enjoy playing, laughing and joking around. They seem to be especially fond of practical jokes and are normally just as amused by their own handiwork as the person they are pranking. Some of them are also very creative with their pranks, often finding innovative ways to shock or delight their victim!
Areas for Personal Growth
Sometimes, since they think on such a large scal, they can be a bit unrealistic about what they can achieve. From the perspectives of others, their goals and dreams might just be a bit too lofty. Big goals are great if you actually have everything it takes to achieve them. After all, it’s thanks to those who had big plans that we have things like TVs, cell phones, sewer systems and public transport today. But we also have to be honest with ourselves when it comes to what we can realistically achieve with the resources we have.
Although these natives are naturally able to see things from the viewpoints of others, that sometimes isn’t enough to stop them from owning some very fixed opinions. It can be their way or the high way in some instances, even though that goes against their internal guidance system, which is normally set to honesty and benevolence. I think that this has a lot to do with them pushing forward their version of the truth, even if it ruffles a few feathers. What they think is the fairest and the best for all concerned might not be, but if they think it is, they will fight to be heard and understood.
At times, they also can be a little too direct and this can come off as tactless or even rude. Most of the time, though, this is because they just want to cut to the chase and avoid wasting any time or energy by sugar coating what they see as the truth. They really value the truth and think that they, and others, should always be honest no matter what. Now, they might not appreciate others being quite as direct with them, especially if they’re having a bad day, but they will probably defend their right to do so should push come to shove.
Sagittarian restlessness is notorious and these people can find it impossible to remain in the same place for too long. So unless they are absolutely enamoured with their project or what they do for a living etc, this will also be subject to frequent change. Because of this tendency, they can find sticking to one relationship, job or career tricky. Their beautiful free-spirited nature can work against them in this way.
But many Sagittarians do wish to experience family life and so they eventually settle down. If this doesn’t happen, they will live happy and fulfilled lives on their own terms with their own version of a family. For instance, a close friend of mine in her fifties lives with her lovely partner and their three dogs on a farm. And they are all as happy as can be!
Physical Appearance
These people tend to look like they are built to last. This robustness is especially notable in their strong thighs and calves. Since a lot of their energy is carried in their legs they might feel inclined to use them for extreme sports like rock climbing, snowboarding, trail running and skiing.
Because this sign is ruled by benevolent Jupiter, they may be inclined to over indulge and therefore carry a little extra weight. Their features may be quite prominent, for example, a prominent nose, thick eyebrows or eyelashes or larger than usual teeth. A lot of these people tend to have luscious hair which they enjoy throwing to the side quite a bit.
As a Spouse
Marriage doesn’t necessarily come naturally to the Sagittarian. They are largely content to roam freely early in life but many eventually settle down. This is especially true for those who have Taurus, Cancer, Leo, Libra, Capricorn or Pisces prominent in their charts. No matter what their chart looks like, ultimately, if they are truly in love with their partner, and that love is reciprocated, they will stick with them.
In marriage, they still need plenty of space. Sometimes so much so that it looks as if they are still single. But this doesn’t necessarily mean they want to appear single so they can flirt with others. Personal space here looks more like them having the time to do the things they enjoyed as a singleton. For example, if they spent a lot of time camping, doing reno work or going to late pottery night classes, they will still want to do those things—-and come hell or high water, they will!
As long as they feel they have plenty of freedom, loyalty and love, they will love their partner intensely and do all they can for them. They are generous in every way, and being so much fun, they will encourage their partner to go on adventures with them as well as socialise, throw parties, and learn new things with them. Their partner will undoubtedly have to keep up with them but it’s likely they will absolutely want to as being with someone born under this star sign can mean a laugh a minute.
Dating
They are usually drawn to those who are very different to them in some way. For instance, those who are from abroad, a different race to them or follow a different religion attract them. Or they could just stand out in the way they look, dress or think. A Sagittarian friend of mine is really attracted to women from Europe who are really artsy, although I think that is also because his Moon sign is Pisces.
Their date will need to possess self-confidence, an open mind and an adventurous spirit. If they are overly cautious, lacking in confidence or possess narrow views, the Sagittarian is likely to flee. They also can’t stand to be boxed in, and those who attempt to do this will probably see them disappear, even if things were going well when they began dating. They must be allowed to march to the beat of their own drum at all times.
As a Parent
The idea of having children is often more interesting to them than the actual day to day grind of being a parent. The nitty gritty of childcare can weigh them down but the fun they have together and the joy they feel knowing that they are fuelling their offspring’s minds, makes up for it.
Because they value their freedom and independence so much, they tend to teach their children to become independent from a young age. Part of this is teaching them good life skills, general knowledge and street smarts. They also place a strong emphasis on raising their children to be honest, responsible adults who make ethical life choices.
As with all of their relationships, they still need plenty of freedom but with children this looks more like a room of their own in the house like a man cave or a woman’s craft room, or even a woman cave (why not?!).
As a Pet Owner
Their fur babies are their pride and joy, especially if they don’t have children. As long as they aren’t too demanding of their time and freedom, they feel uplifted and mentally stimulated by their pets. Many are inclined to bring them on their adventures, especially their dogs. I know someone born under this sign who takes his German Shepard on really long and ambitious hiking trails and they both seem to relish the experience!
Taking their pets for their daily strolls in natural locations like beaches and forests is also really enjoyable for them. Some of these natives prefer to have multiple pets but only if they can afford it and if it doesn’t encroach too much on their time and freedom.
As a Friend
As I mentioned earlier in this article, these natives make friends pretty easily. They normally seem friendly, pleasant and interesting. They might draw people in with their enthusiasm, positivity, naturally wide smile and even some interesting stories of theirs. Their friends tend to enjoy learning new things from them and vice versa.
As long as they find their friends interesting, and there is plenty of information to exchange, the connection remains strong. They are also especially good at working out issues that arise with friends as they are naturally skilled at seeing things from different perspectives. This skill also helps them to expand their understanding and awareness of the world around them.
As a friend, they are fun to be around, humorous, generous and an overall positive influence. There are plenty of fun adventures to be had with this sort of friend. Other signs could see them as a bit too wild and freewheeling but many will still go on adventures with them.
Other Astrological Placements
Astrology enthusiasts are probably aware that there is a lot more to astrology that one’s Sun sign. Yes, it’s an important piece of the astrological puzzle, but it’s still just a piece. There is a lot more to consider in the chart, especially the Moon and Mercury placements, and even those placements are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the amount of information available.
